Velika beach montenegro. Montenegro's Best Beaches and Major Resorts - The Most Complete Information

Photo-article about holidays in Ulcinj (Montenegro) - about beaches, transport, housing, food and prices, my reviews and impressions.

Ulcinj(aka Ulcinj or Ulcinj) is a resort in the south of Montenegro on the border with Albania. Famous for its sandy beaches , 12 kilometers Velika Plaza, kite spots and island Ada Bojana where the official nudist beach is located.

Ulcinj is often called the warmest city in Montenegro, because there are many sunny days, the water in the sea warms up faster due to the black sand at the bottom, and when it rains in Budva and the Bay of Kotor, Ulcinj may well be hot.

And indeed, in early June, when I was there, the nature in Ulcinj looked like it was deep August in the yard. When everything is green and bright in Budva, in Ulcinj there is yellow burnt grass and dry leaves on the trees.

Features of Ulcinj

1. People (Albanians)

According to various sources, 70 or 80% of the city's population are Albanians. There are a huge number of cars, and even more people. At every step restaurants, bars, coffee houses, clubs. If you go to Montenegro to hang out and walk around the establishments, then Ulcinj is no worse than Budva for these purposes.

When you get to the center of Ulcinj, it seems that you are somewhere in Turkey or in Bosnia and Herzegovina. That easy communication with the locals, which I lacked so much in Budva, I managed to get in the south of the country.

2. English

Finally, they spoke English to us here. Conversations in foreign languages help to feel like abroad or on vacation, otherwise in Budva it seemed as if you had never left home.

3. Prices are lower than in Budva

Ada Bojana— on the island there is a village of fishing cottages where you can rent a wooden house. There are also fish restaurants.☞

Everyone wants to relax in a place where he will feel comfortable and calm. Where he can escape from the hustle and bustle of the city, relax body and soul. The beaches of Montenegro presented below meet all these requirements. Some of them are suitable for couples, while others for those who love leisure and seeks to know new lands and sensations. So, let's look at the best beaches in Montenegro.

The best beaches in Montenegro

1. Sveti Stefan Beach

Sveti Stefan is famous for being the only hotel town in the world. One side of the island is closed to tourists, while the other side offers small houses converted into a luxury hotel. Interesting fact: many years ago there was a prison here, and now it is popular resort which attracts many celebrities.

There are two beaches on the island, one is free, all excursion ships come here. The second beach is on the other side of the island. Everyone who wants to visit it will have to pay not only for the entrance, but also for a table, sunbed, umbrella. The advantage of this resort is a small number of tourists, so this is a rather calm and quiet place.

Since Sveti Stefan is a tourist island, the infrastructure is developed on high level. Here you can splash in the sea, go to a restaurant, cafe or bar, scuba dive, stroll through the flowering parks and groves, go to a souvenir shop and buy a couple of trinkets as a keepsake.

2. Yaz

Jaz is one of the largest and best sandy beaches in Montenegro. It is located near the city of Budva. The wide coastline allows accommodation for many vacationers. The gentle slope into the water makes Jaz Beach a great place to relax with children.

In addition to a paid section, this beach also has a free one, where you do not have to pay for sunbeds and umbrellas. The addition of the beautiful a quiet place- shower with fresh water. Just like on any other beach, vacationers can rent kayaks, catamarans, jet skis, visit a couple of restaurants and cafes. Anyone who arrives in their own car can not worry about its safety, since paid parking with security is provided on the Yaz.

3. Beach on the island of Sveti Nikola

The island of Sveti Nikola is uninhabited. Apart from a few great beaches, where many vacationers flock during the season, there is nothing here. This is a real paradise, where there is no hustle and bustle of busy cities. The whole island is covered with evergreens. Many people are fascinated by the indescribable beauty of the landscape, small bays and secluded places with lagoons. You should know that part of the island is reserved for a nudist beach.

On Sveti Nikola there are both paid and free beach, with sun loungers and umbrellas. The infrastructure here is also well developed:

  • showers, changing rooms and toilets;
  • umbrellas, deck chairs, tables;
  • equipped pier;
  • rescue team.

4. Royal beach of Budva

In the list of the best beaches in Montenegro, the Royal Beach of Budva occupies a special place. This is a relatively small piece of paradise on the lagoon. Previously, representatives of the royal dynasty rested here, but now it is available to politicians and ordinary vacationers. However, if the deputies wanted to relax, the rest who want to bask in the sun will not be able to fulfill their plans.

Unlike other beaches, Royal is more ennobled: clean coast and water, privacy, green spaces, parking and all the necessary infrastructure, which justifies the high cost of relaxing on the beach - from 50 euros.

5. Mogren

Mogren is one of the best beaches in Budva. It is divided into two parts by a rock, in which a passage has been cut and one beach to another. The main advantages of Mogren beach are crystal clear water and picturesque nature. But unfortunately, there are also negative features of the beach - a large influx of people (you will have to make room or take places from the early morning) and a rather high price.

As in other places, the presence of a rich infrastructure justifies the cost of entry and the services provided:

  • comfortable shower rooms, changing cabins, toilets;
  • umbrellas, deck chairs;
  • rent of hoverboards, catamarans;
  • parasailing, wakeboarding;
  • cafe;
  • massage salon;
  • rescue team.

A flat descent to the water makes it possible for children to reach the sea on their own, however, you can only swim in shallow water and with your parents, since the depth near the coast increases rapidly.

6. Kamenovo beach

Kamenovo is a relatively small sandy beach in Montenegro with a gentle slope into the water. It is located near the village of Rafailovichi. This is an interesting, cozy place with tall green spaces, clear sea and excellent service. At the disposal of vacationers: showers with fresh water, changing cabins and toilets. Sun loungers, umbrellas and tables are also available for rent. Cafes and restaurants are open during the summer. There are many people who want to visit Kamenovo beach, but there are always free places.

7. Sutomore

Sutomore is the cleanest Montenegrin beach with golden sand and a length of more than a kilometer. Thanks to the cypresses and pines planted around the shore, the winds bypass the beach. There are hotels and restaurants on the beach. Vacationers are given the opportunity to go swimming or diving. They didn’t forget about traditional beach activities here: catamaran rides, water scooters, “pills”, games on the sand. Hotels, cafes, restaurants, shops, spa-salons and other infrastructure facilities are located in the immediate vicinity of the coast.

The main advantage of Sutomore over other beaches in Montenegro is the ban on the movement of vehicles in the resort area at the time of the swimming season. The addition will be lagoons, forests and rocks that will sink into the soul of everyone who walks through these picturesque places.

8. Chan

Small resort village Chang has two beaches: "Queen's Beach" and "Pearl Beach". The first one cannot be reached by land, as it is surrounded by rocks. The second is the most beautiful beach, dubbed it so thanks to the white pebbles that resemble pearls.

"Pearl Beach" is well equipped. In its arsenal there are special fenced places where children can swim. It is also surrounded by cypress, eucalyptus, pine trees. They not only protect from the hot sun, but also release useful essential oils, making the rest useful and enjoyable.

It is worth noting that the resort village is not deprived of a wide range of hotels, hotels, private houses, villas and other places for accommodation.

9. Trsteno

Trsteno is one of the most picturesque beaches of the Montenegrin coast. It is located near Budva. Vacationers here will enjoy clean sand, water and beach cafes with delicious dishes. You can also rent sun loungers with umbrellas for a small price, swim with fins and a mask near the rocks and watch colorful fish. This is a good place for couples with small children as it is not deep here.

Trsteno Beach attracts many vacationers, so if you come here on the weekends, you may not find a free place.

10. Becici Beach

Becici is a two-kilometer beach with the cleanest coast, fresh air, small pebbles and a gentle slope to the sea. This beach of Montenegro is located 3 km from Budva and is great for families with children.

The well-established infrastructure of Becici will appeal to every vacationer. It has everything you need: entertainment for children, restaurants, cafes, hotels, shops.

The advantage of Becici is equipped places for couples and for ardent fans of extreme sports. Everyone will find what they were looking for. Rest fun, comfortable and unforgettable.

The Great Beach (from Montenegrin "Velika Plaža" also translates as "Big Beach") is the famous resort coast of the Ulcinj Riviera, located 3 km southeast of the city. The beach strip continues to the mouth of the Buna (Bojana) River, then the second large and popular local beach begins - Ada Bojana near the border with Albania.

Veliko beach of Montenegro is the longest beach in the country: it stretches for almost 13 kilometers, and its width is close to 60 meters.

Ulcinj Great Beach is also considered the sandiest in Montenegro. It is covered with dense grayish volcanic sand, which is credited with healing properties: a beneficial effect on rheumatism, arthritis, and muscle diseases.

Entry into the water from the sandy shore is gentle, the bottom is smooth. Almost along the entire length of the resort coast, the depth increases slowly, the first 10-30 meters is shallow water, where adults are knee-deep or waist-deep, but it is convenient for children to relax and swim. After 30-40 meters the depth increases faster, you can swim without swimming behind the buoys. Unlike pebble beaches, because of the sand and troubled sea the water here is not so clear.

Infrastructure

Entrance to the beach is free. The coast of Veliko beach in Ulcinj is territorially divided into several beach areas that pass into each other, many of them have names: these are the beaches of Miami, Mojito, Safari, Tropicana, Florida, Havana, Tampico, Copacabana and others. Beach equipment is offered for rent everywhere: sunbeds and umbrellas. Rental prices are around 8-10 euros (EUR) for two sunbeds with an umbrella, the cost may vary slightly on different mini-beaches.

Each section of Veliko Beach is equipped with all the necessary amenities: changing cabins, showers, toilets, sun loungers stand in several rows, in some places there are campsites. Many mini beaches have playgrounds for children, and various cafes with drinks and light snacks are also located on the coast. Between the sites there are also deserted, unequipped sites.

The nearest settlement, except for the city of Ulcinj, is the village of Stoy on the coast. There are shops with beach accessories and products, restaurants, accommodation for tourists.

According to travelers, water attractions there is not much on the beach, the children will be interested in the trampoline. In the summer, there are discos on the beach at night.

Since there are no bays and bays in this area, the wind constantly blows from the sea, creating waves. Especially the wind increases in the afternoon. The southern part of the Great Beach is popular among surfers, there is an equipment and wetsuit rental station, kitesurfing schools for beginners, including Russian schools with instructors. To get to this part of the beach, you need to go to the section of Copacabana beach. About 100 meters before reaching the sea, turn left onto a dirt road and follow it, parallel to the sea, until the signs of surf schools appear, the Russians will be the first. However, it should be borne in mind that there is a sandy road from the highway, it is better to leave the car near the village of Stoy or in the parking lot of Copacabana beach and walk. best time for kitesurfing on the Great Beach - from mid-June to August.

After the kitesurfing schools, the beach ends, there are restaurants called "floating" because they are located on the Bojana River. They offer local dishes made from freshly caught marine and freshwater fish.

At the height of the season, the coast near Ulcinj is crowded, but the beach is very long, and it is enough to walk along the coast to find yourself comfortable place- sit on a rented sun lounger or next to it on your own towel. Perhaps, due to the remoteness from the most visited resorts in Montenegro, the beach is not considered the most popular.

How to get to the Great Beach of Montenegro

By land, it is more convenient to get to the coast by car, since there are no regular buses on the desired route, and walking is quite a long way. From any city, you need to go to the Adriatic highway to Ulcinj, then turn off at the signs "Velika Plaža" onto the R-17 road, parallel to the sea. It will be possible to stop at one of the coastal parking lots, which are equipped with most sections of the beach. The road from Budva will take about 1.5 hours (more than 70 km), from Kotor - about 2 hours (95 km).

By bus, you can only get to Ulcinj itself. Several flights depart daily from the Budva bus station, the travel time is from 1.5 to 2 hours.

Further from Ulcinj, you can get to the pier at the beginning of the Great Beach by boat, which departs from the pier of the Old Town. On foot from the Old Town of Ulcinj, you can walk to the beach in about 40 minutes. Another option is to get from the city to the beach by taxi: De Lux Taxi, Kalaja Taxi, Smart group Taxi work in Ulcinj.

Panorama on Veliko beach Montenegro:

Video about Veliko beach:

Great Beach (Montenegro) - the longest and most sandy beach in the country. It stretched from Ulcinj to the border with Albania. The Montenegrin name Velika Plaza (Velika Plaza) is translated very simply - "big beach". The beach, without exaggeration, is large - it occupies 20% of the area of all the beaches of Montenegro.

Velika beach in Montenegro attracts vacationers not only in size, but also in unusual black sand of volcanic origin. Exactly the same sand in Montenegro is only on one beach - which is located on the island of the same name on the very border with Albania.

With all this, the Great Beach (Montenegro) is not popular with tourists. Even in the high season, you can easily find free sunbeds or a place on the sand here. Perhaps it affects the remoteness of the Great Beach from the main Montenegrin resorts - Budva, Petrovac, Rafailovici, Becici, Herceg Novi and others.

Great Beach Features

Velika Plaža in Montenegro starts at . 13 kilometers of beach stretch along the flat coast to the Bojana River. Behind it is another beach - on the island of Ada Bojana, and behind the island is already Albania. Great Beach (Montenegro), strictly speaking, consists of a dozen different beaches. Each has its own sunbeds with umbrellas, toilets, showers. Almost everywhere there are parking lots, playgrounds, cafes and other infrastructure.

There are also wild sections of the beach without sun loungers and other beach paraphernalia.

The name of the beaches on Velika Plazha (I don’t give all of them): Miami beach, Mojito Beach Ulcinj, Safari Beach, Tropicana Beach, Florida Beach, Havana Beach ( Havana beach), Tampico Beach, Copacabana Beach and others.

Miami Beach is a typical example of the Great Beach

I will show on the example of Miami beach. The parking lot is large, it is possible to park the car in the shade. On the beach there are several rows of sun loungers, changing cabins, showers, a toilet and special large sunbeds for massage, there is a cafe. The cost of a set of two sun loungers and an umbrella in season is 10 euros, in the off season - 7 euros. Approximately the same prices for sunbeds on all other beaches of Velika Plazha.

I wouldn’t single out any particular beach, although I haven’t been to all of them, but I got the impression that throughout the Great Beach, the “hospital temperature” is the same plus / minus 1-2 degrees.

There are no big cities in the Velika plaza area. The largest settlement, not counting Ulcinj on the northern edge, is the village of Stoy exactly in the middle of the coast. Here live tourists who come to relax on the beach. The village has many shops for vacationers, there are restaurants.

The beaches in this area are gently sloping, completely sandy. The bottom is also smooth with a very slow increase in depth. In some places, up to one and a half meters, the sea reaches only 70 meters from the coast. The sea is cloudy from the sand - the water here cannot be compared in transparency with the water on the pebble beaches. Throughout Velika Beach in Montenegro there are no bays or bays, so the wind is constantly blowing here and the waves are rising. Due to this special beach - a real paradise for kitesurfers.

kitesurfing schools

In the southern part of the beach there are stations for surfers. Both professionals and beginners come here, for whom schools work. At any station you will find kites and suits for rent, experienced instructors and even a cafe. Among the schools there are also Russians: KitePlaza and Miracle Beach. In terms of quality, they are in no way inferior to Montenegrin ones.

If you are going to Velika Plaža in Montenegro for kitesurfing, then remember how to find the stations:

  1. From the Adriatic highway, turn off at the sign for Copacabana Beach. It is a little further from the center of the village of Stoy.
  2. Before reaching 100 meters from the sea, turn left. You need a side primer, there are not many of them.
  3. Then you go, without turning, parallel to the sea. You will see the first signs of the stations - you are there. It's just the Russians.
  4. From the Adriatic highway, the road is almost completely sandy, albeit packed. If you are afraid to get stuck, then it is better to leave the car in the village. The distances are small, three kilometers from the highway, so you can reach it in half an hour.

Kitesurf at Velika Plaža in Montenegro is ideal for beginners. The wind here blows 2-5 hours a day, often with gusts, but always in the same direction. Therefore, it is easy to learn, and professionals love this place. The best time to visit the station is from late June to mid-August.

floating restaurants

Behind the schools, the beach is already ending - it is separated from the island of Ada Bojana by the Bojana River. Here, right on the river, there are small restaurants owned by locals. They are also called floating restaurants. These establishments serve fish, which is caught right there. You can choose both sea and river fish, because the river connects Lake Skadar with the Adriatic Sea. Don't expect any special frills, but those restaurants are what tourists like - simple and fresh food.

The Bojana River separates Velika Plaža in Montenegro from the beach on the island of Ada Bojana. There is a large hotel for nudists, respectively, most of the island beach is given to lovers of sunbathing naked, but there is also a regular beach. Further south flows the second branch of the river, which separates Montenegro from Albania. I advise you to rent a boat and ride along the island or up the Boyana River. Or take a walk around the island of Ada Bojana.

Pros and Cons of Velika Beach

  • Sand cover.
  • Gentle entrance to the sea.
  • Developed infrastructure.
  • Remoteness of the beach: from Budva to the beginning of Velika Plazha, one and a half hours drive.
  • Turbid water due to sand.
  • Wind (in hot weather it does not interfere, and in the cloudy it is easy to freeze after swimming because of it).

When planning a trip to Montenegro, I advise you to set aside a few days for the Ulcinj Riviera. There are not only beaches, but attractions. For example, Solana Ulcinj. You can live both in Ulcinj and at Velika plaza.

How to get to Velika Plazha

The Adriatic Highway (the second name is the Jadran Way) is the only route that runs along the entire Montenegrin coast and connects the resorts. Accordingly, from Budva, and from Kotor, and from Bar, and by car, and by bus, you will travel along it.

By car

The easiest way to get to the Great Beach from other Montenegrin resorts is by car - your own or rented (read the link). You leave on the Yadransky way and forward, to the south. When arriving in Ulcinj, follow the signs for Velika Plaža. From the beginning of the Great Beach (after the passage of the Port Milena Canal over the bridge), another paved road runs parallel to the main highway along the sea for several kilometers, from which paths to the beaches depart.

By bus

Bus service in Montenegro is well developed, but buses do not go to the Great Beach itself. You need a bus to Ulcinj (), from where to get to Velika Plazha there are really three options.

  1. By taxi - 10-15 euros (bargain until the last).
  2. By boat (during the season, boats depart from Ulcinj beach and cost 3 euros per person round trip).
  3. On foot either along the Jadran path (from the bus station 3 kilometers, 40 minutes), or through and along the path in the rocks above the sea (from the bus station 7 kilometers and 90 minutes, from the old town of Ulcinj 5 kilometers and 60 minutes).

I met information about minibuses plying between Ulcinj and Velika beach in the season (travel 1 euro), but I did not see them with my own eyes.

Accommodation near Velika Plaža

I'm used to booking accommodation through Airbnb (how to get a discount on the first booking), but in the Great Beach area, this service has few rental offers. But on Booking there are plenty to choose from.

Hotel Otrant - rating "Good". The 4-star hotel is located at the very beginning of the Great Beach, 3 km from the Old Town of Ulcinj. It offers 2 restaurants, and the road to the sea takes only one minute. The hotel is mainly oriented for adult tourists.

Apartments HTP Velika Plaža Ulcinj - Good rating. Located 300 meters from Mojito Beach, the apartments have private parking and a roundtrip airport transfer.

Niki Apartments - Very good rating. If you are looking for peace and tranquility then this is the place for you. The apartments are located 1 km from Velika Plazh, surrounded by a large green garden, equipped with a balcony and a kitchenette.

Comfort Apartments - "Very good" rating. The aparthotel is located about 1 km from the sandy beach. It offers air-conditioned studios with a kitchen or kitchenette and a private bathroom. It is ideal to come here by car to travel around the area. The hotel has its own small swimming pool.

Montenegro is a great option for a quality holiday. This country has long attracted fans of clean ecology and good beaches. If you are going to Montenegro for the first time, you are probably worried about the state of the beaches in the resorts of the country.

Are there sandy beaches in Montenegro?

If you want to relax in Montenegro on a sandy beach, then you should know some of the features of the country. This is a mountainous area, which is located near the coast. Therefore, there are many capes and bays.

Sandy beaches, formed naturally, are only beyond Ulcinj (in the south of the coast). There is a great place - Velika Plazha or Big Beach, which occupies a huge area.

The rest of the coast is covered with large pebbles and intersected by rocks. Such a natural coating is not very impressive to others. For this reason, tenants annually bring small pebbles and sand to their beaches.

Thus, almost all the beaches of Montenegro have imported sand. Usually pebbles are covered with sand, and at the end of the season it mixes well with it. Part of the sand is washed into the sea.

Sea waves contribute to the grinding of large pebbles to the size of buckwheat grains. The result is a special stone-sand mixture that covers the coast.

Where are sandy beaches in Montenegro

Sandy beaches are concentrated in the southern part of the country (Ulcinsk Riviera). The first place in popularity is occupied by the Big Beach. Pebbles are completely absent on the Budva Riviera - Plavi Horizonti beach.

There are sandy beaches with brought sand in the following settlements: Petrovac, Becici, Stoliv, Dzhenovichi, Igalo, Muo, etc.

Montenegro - hotels with a sandy beach

An excellent holiday is offered by hotels located on the territory famous resorts: Budva, Herceg Novi, Petrovac, Ulcinj, Sveti Stefan.

Sand with pebbles is the most comfortable option for beaches in Montenegro. Thanks to this coverage, the sea in the coastal strip remains clean. There is no muddy suspension in the water, and sand whirlwinds do not occur on the coast. Returning from the beach, you will not shake the sand out of your clothes and bag.

We list the hotels located near the natural sandy beach in the city of Ulcinj:

  1. SENATOR 4*HOTEL. This is the most respectable hotel, which invites guests around the clock. It has its own swimming pool, terrace, parking and garage.
  2. PORTO 3*HOTEL SMALL. Located next to the Big Beach and provides all the necessary services for a comfortable stay.
  3. Medina Apartments. They are located in the very center of the city and are 400 m away from the sea. Comfortable rooms with all amenities are at your service.
  4. holiday apartments. The hotel is located next to Long Beach and close to the city centre. It is designed for couples with children and guarantees a relaxing holiday.

There are many others in the Ulcinj resort good hotels and apartments designed for tourists with different income levels. Most of them are located near the sandy beach. Therefore, every vacationer will be able to choose a home to his taste.
