Last modified 06/25/2019

New Holland. I am sure that every resident of St. Petersburg has heard about the existence of this park, but if you have not been here, you will not be able to imagine what it is like. Here I am too. I heard a lot, but didn’t fully understand what it was. I decided to go and see it with my child. Admission is free, why not?!

Where is New Holland located?

Opening hours:

How to get to New Holland

By car

Parking is a big problem. There are simply none, and a tow truck is constantly working, creating problems for those who decide to park for a short time where they are not allowed. Be careful!

By public transport

If you are traveling by metro, then choose the line that is most convenient for you. The New Holland Park is located near the St. Petersburg metro stations:

  • Admiralteyskaya (line No. 5, lilac). Walking distance 2.2 km;
  • Vasileostrovskaya (line No. 1, green). Walking distance 2.5 km;
  • Sennaya Square (line No. 2, blue). Walking distance 2.5 km

By bike

If you ride a bicycle, there is bicycle parking to the left of the park entrance:

History of New Holland Island in St. Petersburg

According to the instructions of Peter I, in 1719, 2 canals were dug - Admiralteysky and Kryukov, thereby creating a triangular-shaped island. Later, ship warehouses were moved here.

New Holland was completely closed from prying eyes for almost 300 years, and only in 2004 all objects were transferred to the city.

The reconstruction was carried out by a company that is part of the Millhouse group of Roman Abramovich

New Holland today

This is an unusual park space in the very center of the city.

The first thing that catches your eye is linden alley along the Admiralty Canal. More than 200 trees brought from European nurseries.

Walking along the main alley it is difficult not to notice wooden pavilions, made in the same style of the 20-30s. Here you can find:

  • information center with souvenirs;
  • a toilet in the basement that will not leave anyone indifferent;
  • kiosk with flowers;
  • ice cream kiosk

Next we see a large area given over to an ideal thick lawn, where there are chairs, and there are even high chairs for children:

If you were unable to occupy an empty chair, you can sit on a blanket or jacket in front of stage, arranged on the lawn. It is here that various concerts and performances of famous people are held:

In winter, a skating rink will appear instead of a lawn.

Restored building "Forge" should combine several functions at once:

  • restaurant;
  • lecture hall;
  • space for work, film screenings and concerts

"Bottle" or a former naval prison will house various commercial projects. Each floor has its own function:

  1. Cafes and small food shops;
  2. Designer showrooms, a large bookstore of the Garage Museum, an antique shop and a vinyl record store;
  3. Sports and beauty (yoga rooms, beauty salon, etc.);
  4. Children's educational club "Attic"

New Holland even has its own garden with ornamental grass.
Here you can find well-known herbs:

  • curly parsley;
  • Melissa;
  • mint;
  • cauliflower;
  • dill, etc.

Walking along the path in the garden, you forget about the bustle of the city.

Children's playground "Fregat"

This is a real frigate "Peter and Paul", reduced by 80%. Inside there is a whole system of passages and all sorts of interesting devices. Children climb around the ship with delight and don’t want to leave.

Benches have been designed for parents waiting for their children. There are also lockers at the entrance for personal belongings.

The playground is intended for children over 12 years old.

They also didn’t forget about the kids and created their own playground for them.

Playground for kids

What I liked most was the development corners.

There is also a sandbox, slide and swing.

Food and drink

There are various food stalls and restaurants throughout the park. Moreover, tenants undergo a strict selection process. New Holland is home to only the best eateries. By the way, the prices here are also reasonable.

Farm at Home. You should definitely try the black burger (350 rubles) with draft cider (200 rubles).

Deli from the Volkonsky bakery chain. Soup (200 rubles), salad (250-350 rubles), there is a children's menu.

The impressions from the park are the most positive. It feels like you are walking through a park of the 20s and 30s somewhere in Paris. Everywhere you look everything is perfect. No, honestly, an absolutely perfect park. It’s even nice to just sit on a bench here. There are a lot of young people reading books or couples in love cooing on chairs. There are also many families with children who are absolutely delighted with the playgrounds. Where else can you find a free huge ship that is so fun to climb?

In New Holland, even trash cans are well thought out and require sorting, just like in Europe.

Finally, some photos

New Holland Island in St. Petersburg is the only one of the city's 42 islands created by people. For more than 150 years, access to the island was closed, but now it has become a venue for cultural and art festivals, various events and interesting events.

New Holland is a popular recreation area for citizens and tourists. On sunny days it's nice to just lie on the grass. Unlike other parks in the city center, this is not only allowed, but encouraged.

Guests of New Holland will find plenty of entertainment to suit every taste:

  • Contemporary art exhibitions (most of them free)
  • Lectures and seminars, many of them are free, you just need to register in advance
  • It offers cuisine from various culinary schools and countries of the world (Russian, Mediterranean and American, Jewish and Mexican, Eastern and Asian). Visiting restaurants, of course, is paid, but the prices are quite reasonable. In the summer, restaurants and cafes set up outdoor terraces, which, unlike most streets in the center, are located far from noisy roads.

You can try burghers (Ferma Burger) or sandwiches (Dickman's Deli cafe), pizza at the Camorra Isola pizzeria. You will be treated to a cup of coffee at Surf Coffee. There is also a glass bar offering a large selection of liqueurs and signature dumplings.

Now New Holland is open to guests all year round. In winter, there will be an ice skating rink on top of the lawn with music, lighting and its own program of events.

Arch of New Holland

The main attraction that is shown to tourists is the New Holland Arch, located on the opposite side of the island (!!!), opposite the embankment of the Moika River 35. The author of the construction is Jean Baptiste Vallin-Delamot, according to whose design the arch connected two buildings located along the Moika.

The structure is located above the canal connecting the Moika River and the harbor basin in the center of the island. The structure is famous for its Tuscan columns and features a combination of red brick and cut granite. The height of the arch is 23 meters, the span width is a little more than 8 meters.

If you have very little time, then the New Holland Arch can be seen during a boat trip along the small rivers of St. Petersburg. But not all routes pass by New Holland; this must be clarified when purchasing a ticket.

Other buildings on the island

  • In the 19th century, according to the design of the military architect Alexander Staubert, a Naval prison was built, the shape of which resembled a tower. But people quickly dubbed it a bottle. This is where the expression “Stay out of the bottle” comes from. Now in this building there are cafes and fashion shops, an antique and bookstore, a beauty salon, ballet and yoga, as well as an educational space for children
  • There is a blacksmith shop nearby. Currently, the Kuznya House club and restaurant are located here.
  • At the end of the 19th century, a pool was built on the island for testing ships, in which the outstanding shipbuilder Alexey Krylov, who worked on the theory of unsinkability of ships, conducted experiments
  • The latest historical building in New Holland is the Commandant's House, where the family of the island's commandant lived. In Soviet times, maritime departments were located here, and now the Mayak school of creative industries operates here.
  • During the First World War, the most powerful naval headquarters radio station for that time was equipped on the island, maintaining communication with ships not only in the Baltic, but also in the Black Sea. The radio station building was demolished in 2006.

During Soviet times, the island was a closed zone. Military units were stationed here.

Story

Initially, the timber from which the ships were built was stored in warehouses next to the Admiralty. This place was called Holland. In 1719, 2 canals were dug between the Moika and Neva - Admiralteysky and Kryukov. This is how a man-made triangular island was formed, to which the warehouses were moved. According to Peter's idea, this island began to be called New Holland.

In the early 30s, wooden warehouses were built here, and then stone ones, surrounding the island along the perimeter. The author of the project was Savva Chevakinsky, a master of Baroque. According to his idea, the wood was dried standing up, which saved space and protected the wood from rotting. The project for finishing the facades was carried out by the classicist architect Jean Baptiste Vallin-Delamot.

New Holland today

The New Holland complex consists of several dozen objects, 11 of which are monuments of federal significance. In 2004, the ensemble of buildings on the island was transferred to the jurisdiction of the city.

The winner of the investment tender held by the administration of St. Petersburg for the purpose of further development and preservation of architectural monuments on the island was the branch of the Millhouse company, New Holland Development LLC, affiliated with the Millhouse company of Roman Abramovich.

In 2011, a competition was held for the best renovation concept. The winner was the American bureau Work AC, which presented the “City within a City” project, which envisages the creation of three activity zones - centers for the arts, cinema and fashion, as well as gastronomy.

To date, New Holland Development has refused to work with Work AC, and the Dutch company West 8, specializing in landscape design and development of public spaces, has been chosen as the new designer of the master plan for the development of the territory.

A total of five stages of reconstruction are planned, the last of which will be completed in 2025.

On the Kryukov Canal there are several special attractions of St. Petersburg: the Mariinsky Theater, and another wonderful place - New Holland. Many have probably heard about this place, but few know what it is. This is what our small but, I hope, interesting conversation is about today.
New Holland is one of the 42 islands of St. Petersburg. Mysterious island, the island is a mystery. If you look at it this way, we have heard a lot about him, but we don’t know much about him. Because in order to know, you must at least see. But New Holland has always been a closed territory and only recently became accessible to visitors.

What do we know about New Holland?
This is an artificial island (actually two islands) in the shape of a triangle, created by human hands. The island is bordered by the Moika River and two canals: Kryukov and Admiralteysky. In the old days, there were warehouses here where timber was stored for the construction of ships. Initially, the warehouses were wooden, but later stone ones were built along the entire perimeter of the island. The author of the project is the famous S.I. Chevakinsky, a master of Baroque. We have already met him. New Holland is a unique monument of industrial architecture of early classicism. There is simply no analogue to it.

Arch of New Holland
The most famous part of the New Holland complex is the arch. It was built above the entrance to the canal. The author of the project is Jean Baptiste Vallin-Delamot. The arch connects two buildings located along the Moika River. The height of the arch is 23 meters, the span width is just over 8 meters.

Opposite the New Holland arch on the other side of the Moika behind the gate there is another attraction - the Palace of Grand Duke Alexander Mikhailovich - the grandson of Emperor Nicholas I and the Grand Duchess Grand Duchess Ksenia Alexandrovna, the eldest daughter of Emperor Alexander III (Moika River Embankment, 106).

The gates of the palace are decorated with the princess's monograms - letters TO And A

Ksenia Alexandrovna is the latter’s sister. Unlike her brother, she lived a long and happy life. She was a mother of six children, a loving and beloved wife. In 1919, she emigrated, lived happily in London and died at the age of 85.

Constructions of New Holland
In the mid-18th century, a naval prison building was built on the island. The shape of the building was special - round. For this it was nicknamed “the bottle”. The expression “Stay out of the bottle” came from those times. Also here, on the initiative of Mendeleev, the first experimental pool in Russia was built and a laboratory for the development of smokeless gunpowder was created. The fact that the island was closed is understandable. Ships and boats were tested here, and various research and development activities were carried out.
During the First World War, the most powerful radio station of the naval headquarters at that time was located here.
Almost all of the above was destroyed in 2006 in the process of transforming a unique historical monument into a commercial and entertainment facility.

New Holland today
In July 2011, the island was opened to the public. Now New Holland is a cultural center where various events are held: concerts, exhibitions, performances, lectures, and various sports competitions.
There is a cafe, a shop, an organic vegetable garden, an art gallery, etc. on the island. Among them, I would like to highlight the Holland cafe, which is located in the round guardhouse building, and the Volkonsky cafe-bakery. These are places where you can have a good time, eat delicious food, and relax.
You can read about how the previous season of “Summer in New Holland” went on the island’s website. We are still waiting for a new program for this summer.

Reconstruction is currently ongoing on the island and should be completed by 2017. However, even in its current state, New Holland remains one of the most mysterious attractions of St. Petersburg, a mysterious island that attracts the attention of tourists from all over the world. Come and see for yourself.
My photographs of the New Holland Arch were taken on January 8, 2013, the last day of our . The photographs are winter, skimpy on colors. And in the summer, the arch is buried in greenery, reflected in the Moika River and two specially created canals and... delights tourists who admire it from the embankments and from the water.

Some visiting rules that I noticed:
The following is prohibited on the island:
- for children under 14 years of age to be unaccompanied by parents,
- bring drinks and food, except baby food,
- professional photo and video shooting.

New Holland is a small man-made island in St. Petersburg, which has long been ruled by the military. But in just a few years, this place, located away from the big “travel” attractions, has been transformed. Now New Year's Day has a cozy park, kiosks with trendy fast food from famous St. Petersburg restaurants, temporary wooden pavilions stylized in antique style and restored capital historical buildings.

What to see

A significant part of the island is occupied by a lawn on which you can walk. Light metal chairs are placed on the green carpet, and there is a stage where concerts, lectures and film screenings are held during the warm season. And in winter there is a large ice skating rink.

The main children's entertainment in New Holland is a playground in the form of a huge model of the ancient frigate “Peter and Paul”.

The park has 6 temporary pavilions, all of them located along the main alley. The attractive buildings made of wood, metal and glass house an information box with souvenirs, food stalls and restrooms. The largest pavilion is used for exhibitions.

The authentic historical buildings of New Holland also came to life. Thus, a club and restaurant Kuznya House was opened in the former forge. Now within the 300-year-old walls you can communicate, work, listen to music, eat and drink deliciously. And in the most recognizable building, the former Bottle prison, there is a whole scattering of interesting projects. The first floor is completely gastronomic; burger joints and coffee shops rule the roost here. On the second floor you can buy designer clothes, get acquainted with the latest in the world of comics, and delight your child with a unique handmade toy. The third floor is an area of health, beauty and sports with hairdressing salons, a yoga room and a boxing club.

There are 42 islands in St. Petersburg, 41 are natural and the only one created by hand. This is New Holland in the Admiralteysky district. For more than 150 years, it was impossible to enter the island, but today it is open to the public - there is a park here, festivals and entertainment events are held.

History of the island

During the construction of St. Petersburg, Peter I invited shipbuilders from Holland to work in the shipyards along the Neva. Thanks to their participation, the port began to resemble a foreign one so much that it was nicknamed Holland. The territory of the island was formed in the 18th century, at which time the first wooden sheds and utility rooms were built. A little later, Savva Chevakinsky developed a new project for the territory with stone buildings in a harsh fortress style. According to the project, timber warehouses were built along the perimeter of the island, designed to load logs from water and land, and the courtyard was used for cutting trunks and building new ships.

The design of the facades was carried out by Jean-Baptiste Vallin-Delamot. In his project, he emphasized the solemnity of the buildings with arcades and porticoes and proposed building a real portal on the island from granite blocks in a classical style. Construction began, but was not completed - the architect made a number of critical errors in calculations and was removed from the project. In his place, engineer Johann Gerard was invited, who was supposed to check the calculations and eliminate inaccuracies. However, Gerard tried to implement his own plan for the island, "losing" Delamot's drawings. Unfortunately for him, copies of documents were found in the archives, and the idea was not a success - he had to correct the mistakes of his colleague. By 1767, the revised plan of the island was approved, and by the end of the 18th century. construction has been completed.

Attractions and entertainment

At the entrance to the island there is an information center where guests can get information about ongoing events, ask questions and leave wishes, and buy memorable souvenirs. The stands display posters about the history of New Holland and a model of the island. Bicycle parking is available.

Next to the information center is the Commandant’s House, a historical building in which the commandant’s family lived and later housed naval offices. In 2013, the building was given the status of a monument, and in 2017, the Mayak school of creative industries was opened for children 5-17 years old. The school's teachers teach children the basics of music and design, photography and animation.

Next is the building of a former prison with the strange name “Bottle”. It was built in 1830. After restoration, the building is of a commercial nature - gastro bars and restaurants, shops, as well as health and fitness centers are located here. There is a stage in the courtyard for organizing concerts.

Children's playgrounds and recreation areas

In addition to historical buildings, the island has park and recreational areas, playgrounds and petanque courts. Concerts, contemporary art exhibitions, thematic seminars and lectures are regularly held. Most events are free with advance registration.

The Frigate playground for children is one of the favorite attractions of tourists. The frame of the ship “Peter and Pavel” is installed on the territory, the dimensions of which are 80% of the actual size of the ship. It reaches a height of 6 m and a length of 26 m. Children enjoy climbing onto the ship and exploring interesting objects: the steering wheel, a spyglass, rope crossings. Parents can accompany their children, but in practice most prefer to stay in a nearby recreation area and watch their children from there. You can safely send children over 5 years old to the frigate, and children will be more comfortable playing on a separate playground with slides and sandboxes.

The island welcomes guests all year round. To maintain order, there is a set of rules that visitors must follow. Key ones:

  • comply with security service requests;
  • move around the island on foot;
  • Do not take dogs and cats with you for a walk (exception: disabled people with guide dogs).

New Holland Island is open daily: Mon-Thu from 9:00 to 22:00, Fri-Sun from 9:00 to 23:00. Address: Admiralteysky Canal Embankment, 2. You can get there by metro to the Admiralteyskaya or Sennaya Ploshchad stations, and then walk to the island. Another option is to take a bus to the Truda Square stop.
