In accordance with the Federal Aviation Regulations (hereinafter FAR), which are mandatory for all Russian airlines, the age of the child is determined on the date of transportation from the point of departure (Section VIII, clause 103).

Example:
You are flying with a child for a week to Barcelona. At the time of departure to Spain, he is still 11 years old. He will celebrate his birthday in the capital of Catalonia. At the time of returning to Russia, the child is already 12 full years old.

Airplane ticket price

Depending on the age of the child, a plane ticket will be free or with significant discounts.

• A ticket for a child under 2 years old without a separate seat is issued free of charge when flying within Russia. When flying abroad, the discount will be 90% of the fare.

Accompanying a child on a plane without parents

In accordance with the FAR (paragraph 104), a child from 2 to 12 years old can fly without parents under the supervision of a carrier. If such a service is provided by the airline.

Let's start with the youngest category - kids under 2 years old. In the professional dictionary of airlines, such passengers are called "infants", in the English equivalent - "infant". With such children in financial terms, the problems are the least. They fly for only 10% of the cost, and sometimes, if they fly literally in the arms of an accompanying adult, they are generally free. Price policy it depends on the specific carrier.

On the one hand, from the age of 2, paragraph 104 of the FAP allows flying without parents, but under the supervision of the carrier, however, airlines reserve the right to increase the minimum age of such a traveler in order to avoid risks. Such conditionally independent flights can be allowed from the age of 3, 4 or even from 6 years old, but most often from the age of 5 years (if, of course, the carrier has such a service at all). It is possible that you will have to pay extra for it, and indeed - when flying unaccompanied by adults, you often have to pay 100% of the ticket price even for a child.

At independent travel under observation, it is important that this observation is not interrupted anywhere. The sending party in the person of an adult is obliged, when buying a ticket, to contact the representative office of the carrier and fill in all the necessary documents there, and then, before departure, arrive with a young passenger at the airport and personally hand him over to the representative of the airline. He will hand it over to the flight attendant and inform the "sender" by phone that the child has flown away. The sending party is also obliged to remain at the airport until the aircraft departs.

At the place of arrival, the scheme works the other way around: the flight attendant passes the small representative of the airline, and he - to the receiving party, but only if the latter has documents confirming his identity.

In the event that no one took the child, the accompanying persons will first contact the parents. If for some reason the situation cannot be resolved, the passenger will be sent back.

Airlines can place restrictions on this type of travel, such as restricting escorts to their direct flights only (or allowing transfers). If there are long transfers, the carrier may additionally require a fee for the baby's meals.

Some parents genuinely care about children 10-12 years old (and even older), so many airlines offer supervised flights for passengers up to 16 years old. At the same time, supervision is mandatory only up to 12 years old, and for older passengers it is already optional - at the discretion of the parents. Such a teenager can fly independently.

Benefits and tariff setting

With regard to benefits and tariffs, this point is the responsibility of each individual carrier, and not the regulatory authorities. There are some general rules, but they are more of a recommendation, so the exact cost should be clarified based on the specific airline and the specific date of the flight. As for documents, here the task is also somewhat more complicated. The only exceptions are Belarus, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan.
