All the guidebooks say that this is an “extraordinarily green city,” but, to be honest, it only seems so from a bird’s eye view, and then only due to the vineyards and hills with which it is surrounded. On the central streets, especially in the Old Town, there is not much more greenery than in Düsseldorf or Cologne. Maybe we thought so because we were traveling to Stuttgart from the very small student city of Tübingen (45 kilometers away), of course, shrouded in greenery, like all small towns.

Stuttgart is unique in that you can choose a landmark to suit the mood with which you woke up: if you want, look at Rembrandt, if you want, at the Mercedes Museum, if you want, sit with a cup of coffee near the Hegel house-museum and think about reason and reality, and in the evening drink yourself a beer and pretzels.

How to get there

Of course, the smartest way to get to Stuttgart from any city in Russia (except, perhaps, Kaliningrad) is by plane. However, those who are afraid to fly or are saving money have the opportunity to travel by bus from Moscow, find fellow travelers with their own transport, or use the railway (which is much less convenient).

Moving within the country: if you are traveling around Germany and have enough time, I advise you to use land transport: bus or train to see the whole country (it ranks only 62nd in the world in terms of territory, which means moving will seem insignificant). Otherwise, you can use domestic flights: fly on a small buzzing (you won’t be able to sleep, and you won’t have time) airplane.

By plane

Direct flights to Stuttgart are only available from Moscow: the flight lasts about 3.5 hours. From other Russian cities, Aeroflot offers connecting flights with transfers in the capital.

From Moscow

Carriers change regularly, as do ticket prices. Cheapest direct flights to this moment offers Aeroflot: about 155 EUR (10,000 RUB) one way, regardless of the time of year.

Truly cheap flights offered by the largest Greek carrier Aegean Airlines, but usually with a very long transfer in Athens (you’ll spend about a day on the way!). But the price, on average, is 60 EUR (4,000 RUB) lower than that of Aeroflot.

Last year there were no flight offers to Stuttgart from the Greek airline, and two years ago Aeroflot did not offer direct flights, and we had to fly through. So I highly recommend staying tuned for updates. It’s convenient to look at offers using special aggregator sites that you all probably know, or.

From Saint-Petersburg

If you are flying from St. Petersburg, it is best to take advantage of the offer Aeroflot. The Russian carrier offers connecting flights, so you will definitely not have any difficulties flying from Moscow, even if the flight between two Russian cities is delayed.

In addition, you will spend about 7–8 hours on the journey, while planning the connection yourself (between flights of two different airlines), you will allow more time for unforeseen circumstances. Such a flight will cost 206 EUR (12,000 RUB) in economy class.

There is only one airport in Stuttgart and, to help tourists, it has an excellent electronic portal where you can:

1. check flight schedules;
2. find out the phone numbers of services of interest;
3. obtain background information;
4. find an airport map or the required location (a specific cafe, check-in desk, smoking room, etc.).

The only drawback of the site: despite the fact that it can be opened in English, the cards remain with German inscriptions. But Google translator or Yandex will solve your problem.

How to get from the airport to the center

In fact, Stuttgart airport is very small, and finding your way around is not difficult; there are signs everywhere.

I didn’t feel the need to use the site, although maybe someone would feel safer this way.

From the airport to the main station (Hauptbahnhof) runs train(S-bahn), tickets for it are easy to buy upon arrival at the terminal. By the way, if group rates apply, you can team up with other tourists.

Trains run every 20 minutes on weekdays and 30 minutes on weekends. Expect to spend about half an hour on the journey. If you arrive at night, please note that the S-bahn operates almost like the Moscow metro: the last train leaves at 00:00, and the morning on the Stuttgart railway begins at 5:00.

You can also get from the airport by bus or by taxi. Buses run near the exits of the arrivals area, and since their schedule is connected with the arrival of planes, you will probably catch the one that will take you to the desired part of the city. Upon arrival in Stuttgart, we went straight to , so we took route No. 828. If you don’t know how to ask where the bus is going or just don’t know which part of Stuttgart you need to go to, go to Hauptbahnhof, it is located almost in the very center and It’s convenient to start exploring the city from there.

If you are going to go by taxi, there is no need to call a car in advance, unless you need additional equipment such as a child seat. Taxis are on duty at the exits at any time of the day, and the cost (about 10 EUR to the city center) is fixed, that is, it will not depend on whether you ordered a car in advance or agreed on the spot.

Be careful! We practically did not see large cars, like minibuses, which means that if you are traveling big company, it will be cheaper to call a car. It will cost you approximately 15 EUR (less expensive than two small sedans).

By train

From Moscow

There are no direct trains from the capital to Stuttgart. There are two options that railway websites offer:

1. route with a transfer in Paris (the journey takes 24 hours or 1.5 days, depending on the time chosen; several trains depart from Belorussky Station per day);
2. direct flight to Frankfurt am Main (the journey takes a little more than a day, the cost is about 100 EUR (6,800 RUB)).

In the first case, you arrive in Stuttgart directly at the Hauptbahnhof (read: city center), but you have a connecting train in Paris, which, of course, is not very convenient. In the second case, you will have to travel around Germany for about 200 km (accordingly, if you are traveling by S-bahn, you will get the same transfer.

According to information from one of the train ticket search engines, there is a fast train No. 23 from Moscow to Frankfurt, which takes only 10 hours, and its price is 2 thousand lower.

From Saint-Petersburg

Residents are also offered to travel by the same train northern capital: a trip by rail with a transfer in Moscow will cost them 114 EUR (7,000 RUB) (including all taxes).

Unfortunately, St. Petersburg residents are not offered a trip all the way to Stuttgart with one transfer (for example, in Paris). You will have to get there through Moscow or Orsha (the train journey takes 1 day and 12 hours) and you will only be able to get to Frankfurt.

How to get from the station to the center

Main Train Station Stuttgart is located in the city center, north historical center, where all the museums and other Sehenswürdigkeiten (that is, “attractions”) are located.

From the station along Königstrasse you can go straight to the main Palace Square, a walk of about 7 minutes.

Tourist streets

Stuttgart is not one of those cities where tourist streets form separate routes along which you can walk for days on end. This is an ordinary German city with two good museums. If you are interested in the city center, here it is on the map:

What to see in 1 day

When choosing attractions that are definitely worth visiting, I am guided by three principles:

1. Uniqueness (Choose something that I won’t see anywhere else in the world. The wine museum is great, but winemaking in Germany isn’t a joke? I wish everyone to visit the plantations of Spain, where in almost every province you can enjoy wonderful wine and listen to a wonderful excursion in the local wine museum ).
2. “Business card” (You should definitely visit an object that is depicted on postcards, like the Eiffel Tower or Cologne Cathedral).
3. The value of the exhibition (between an art gallery with a good collection and a house-museum, I choose a gallery, because the life of all writers and thinkers of one era is identical (no offense to the museums of Hegel in Stuttgart, Beethoven in Bonn, etc.), but on the understanding of Beethoven’s music or Hegel’s conclusions, a visit to the apartment will have little effect.

Since Stuttgart is the capital of Baden-Württemberg, the national Swabian dishes that you can try there are common throughout the state:

Mid-level

In Stuttgart you can find mid-price restaurants with both European and traditional cuisine. Such establishments (except pubs), as a rule, open in the morning, unlike expensive restaurants, where you can only have dinner. Lunch here will cost you 10–15 EUR, dinner - 20 EUR.

• Beer house Gaststatte zum Paulaner(Calwerstrasse 45, Rothebühlplatz U-bahn station, city center). I've been here and would come back again. Paulaner beer is a Bavarian brand and this restaurant is a typical German beer hall. But, if you came to Germany for a short time or are not going to go further to Munich, you should definitely stop by here. You can try local Swabian beer in any cafe in the city, and here you will be served a wonderful Bavarian drink and a set of traditional dishes of Swabian cuisine: cabbage with veal sausages, knuckle or potato salad, in short, the choice is very rich. Prices are more than moderate (about 20 EUR for dinner), the crowd is mostly German, often local, there is always not enough space. The waiters speak English poorly, but you always have the opportunity to point your finger at the menu.

• Brenner(Brennerstr., 5.) A small, very cozy restaurant with good German cuisine, the main drawback is a very small selection of dishes. The price of lunch is about 10 EUR.

• Der rote Hirsch(Marktstr., 46 (Canstatt)) Restaurant with local cuisine. I've heard only the most positive reviews about this place.

• Pizzeria Restaurant FUXXE(Fuchswaldstr., 56) Italian restaurant, where the food is no worse than in Italy. An ideal option for those who are tired of local color.

Expensive

There are many good restaurants in the city, and each one lures you with either stunning views or original local cuisine. If you go and try the same traditional dish in different restaurants, you will realize that it is not so “traditional” because everyone prepares it differently (yes, including potato salad). But I would advise asking for a dish from the chef, or a “calling card” of a particular establishment, because “something national” is served here non-stop to a large flow of tourists, and this way you will have the opportunity to try something new.

• Cube(Kleiner Schlossplatz, 1) The restaurant on Palace Square, with a gorgeous view of the Zemsky Assembly building, is located on the roof of the Museum of Modern Art (on the top floor of a glass building). Perfect panorama in good weather. The place is perfect for charming your date. Local and European cuisine.

• Weinstube Am Stadtgraben(Stadtgraben, 6) My favorite restaurant with local cuisine in the Bad Cannstadt area. (The name of the restaurant is enough for the taxi driver to take you where you need to go). There are two important points:
  1. the establishment opens only at 18:00, so you won’t be able to have lunch here;
  2. On holidays, you need to reserve a table a couple of days in advance. But it’s really incredibly delicious here!

• Zum Ackerbuerger(Spreuergasse, 38)An old restaurant with a traditional flavor, which also opens only for dinner (at 18:00). Expect to spend around 40 EUR here and spend the entire evening.

• Wielandshohe(Alte Weinsteige, 71) Interesting restaurant on the hillside (the only negative: a little far from the center, but there is free parking in case you arrive with your own car. But it’s better not to do this, as they serve excellent wine here :). Opening hours: from 12:00 to 14:00 and from 18:00 to 22:00.

For dinner in one of the establishments of this class, you will pay from 30 EUR to infinity.

Holidays

Large festivals take place here twice a year: a beer festival in the fall, and a spring festival in the spring. These days you wonder how such a relatively small city can accommodate so many guests. Every year in the fall, about 4 million people come to the holiday (for comparison, the population of Germany: 81 million, which means, conditionally, every twentieth resident of Germany comes here in early October).

Locals and the authorities are very proud of the long tradition of festivals. There is even a calendar counting down the days until the start of the holiday.

Safety. What to watch out for

Stuttgart is a very calm city despite being big.

The German metro, unlike the Spanish one, does not have a particularly high number of thefts, although I urge you to be vigilant, especially on festival days. (However, I am describing the situation at the beginning of 2014 and I cannot say exactly how it has changed in last years, in connection with the ongoing policy of accepting refugees).

Things to do

Tourists come here primarily because of the museums of world car brands, but if you have a lot of free time, you can find some entertainment. Although, to be honest, it is not very simple: Stuttgart is an ordinary German city with a standard range of entertainment.

Shopping and shops

If you have already walked around the city and seen enough of the sights, go to Markthalle- an indoor food market with a hundred-year history, located in the center of Stuttgart (next to Marktplatz and Markzstrasse).

I advise you to visit it not only for those who stay in apartments and have their own kitchen, but also for all lovers of sweets, as well as for those who have been traveling around Germany for a long time and are already tired of German cuisine. Here you can find a wide variety of delicacies (from pasta to baklava), as well as fresh fruits and vegetables of excellent quality.

Prices are a little higher than regular supermarkets, but it's worth it. From Monday to Friday the market is open from 7:30 to 18:00, on Saturday - from 7:00 to 17:00, Sunday - closed (regardless of the season).

Bars. Where to go

Bars are very popular in Germany, much more so than nightclubs. Finding them won’t be difficult: there are a great many of them in the city center and on the outskirts.

In my opinion, the most interesting and worthy of special mention bar Sky Beach Stuttgart. This is a small beach with sun loungers in the very center of the city near the main station. In the evening you can enjoy the beautiful sky and excellent drinks.

The place is open during the summer season from 12:00. The average cost of drinks will be 15 EUR.

Clubs and nightlife

Stuttgart residents prefer bars to nightclubs. However, for lovers of club holidays we can recommend Club GRACE on the outskirts of the city (U-bahn Salzäcker), near the SI-Erlebnis-Centrum Stuttgart (an entertainment center where you can also have a great evening with family or friends). By the way, there are very good hotels nearby.

However, all the youth of Stuttgart usually gather in the city center, more precisely on Theodor-Heuss-Strasse: in a place with the greatest concentration of bars and clubs open 24 hours a day.

How to get around the city

The most convenient way to get around the city is by metro (U-Bahn or S-Bahn); the travel system and fares are the same as throughout Germany.

A taxi ride will cost you about 10 EUR to any part of the city. Read more about taxis in Germany.

The most convenient way to get around the Old Town is on foot or by bicycle. And if you are going to see a lot in a day, buy a one-day ticket (Tagesticket) and travel by bus. There are a lot of them on excursion routes.

Transport rental

Renting a car will cost you 20–25 EUR/day in season and about 15 EUR/day in winter. Rental prices at the airport and in the city itself are approximately the same, but still a little more expensive at the airport.

To rent a car, you will only need a driver's license (although it is a good idea to have a passport with you just in case. In some places it is needed to sign a contract). An international driver's license does not need to be issued separately: standard Russian documents are valid in Germany.

But if you are under 20 years old, be prepared for the fact that the price may become higher. Young people are considered to be at risk. But I have never heard of a rental being refused.

If you are coming for a long time, I advise you to ask the hotel for a good rental office. You can find offers from international rental companies.

As a rule, you can rent bicycles, scooters, and motorcycles in the city. I have never rented a car in Stuttgart, but I am sure that the process is no different from other cities. By the way, hotels sometimes rent bicycles.

1. The Mercedes and Porsche museums have paid parking (1 EUR for the first hour, 2 EUR for subsequent hours).
2. During the day there are traffic jams in the city, but not comparable to those in Moscow (more like the St. Petersburg format).
3. In the Old Town, of course, you will have to do without a car.
4. The cost of gasoline is the same as throughout Germany: today it is about 1.4 EUR per liter.

Stuttgart - holidays with children

Whether to take children with you depends on whether you are going to go on holidays or just take a walk around the city. Automotive museums will be very interesting for both boys and girls: you can touch everything and climb everywhere. For these two places it’s worth going to Stuttgart with children; otherwise, it’s just a German city with a typical interactive experience aimed at different audiences: for children - the Pig Museum, for adults - winemaking.

If you are going to go on holidays, I do not recommend taking children with you. Of course, Frühlingfest is fun and there are a lot of attractions, but there is also a lot of different music, beer and students having a blast.
