Grand Theft Auto V game map with secrets and a military base. Mapping the streets of los santos

The Story of Fans Who Revealed Secrets Grand Theft Auto 5 and how they did it.

On September 30th, Craig Ovens posted a lengthy article on eurogamer.net about fans who have attempted to map Los Santos and Blaine County long before the game was released. I present to your attention the translation of this article.

In July 2012, Rockstar released the following screenshot: For most of us, this image conveys just one unambiguous fact. It says that in Grand Theft Auto V there are helicopters. At the time, this was not a curious fact. After all, Grand Theft Auto IV had helicopters too. We wanted to know about airships, fighter jets, all kinds of cool stuff. But for a limited group of fans of the game, this picture was the breakthrough they had been waiting for, the missing piece of an extremely ambitious puzzle.

"From this screenshot, we learned about almost the entire western part of the city," says Thomas Rondo, a geographer by training, better known under the pseudonym Fido_le_muet on gtaforums.com. Rondo is a dedicated member of a team of GTA fanatics who have taken on a major mapping challenge. They set out to create a map of all of Los Santos, from the airport to the harbor, from the golden sands to the highest mountain peaks, even before the game was released.

"In the first trailer, we only got a glimpse of Downtown and a glimpse of Santa Monica and Venice," explains Rondo, referring to areas of the real world. Los Angeles, which Rockstar visually scoured to create the appropriate areas of Los Santos. "But with this new [screenshot], we got to see the entire western part of the city. That makes the map what it is now."

Not surprisingly, cartography was one of the aspects that Rondo liked the most due to his profession. "The main idea that I find attractive," explains Rondo, "is to start from scratch and slowly, step by step, create something significant."

And the cartographers began to work, really slowly. The first few versions of the map were very rough sketches, stitched together from scraps of the city plan that they were able to extract from the first trailers. Rockstar rarely indulges fans with generous marketing, so the cartographers had to work with very little material: one aerial screenshot here, a three-second clip from a street corner there.

They took a close look at the parts of the screenshots that most of us didn't even notice: sun-drenched or fog-shrouded backgrounds, streets flashing past characters' shoulders or helicopter blades. It was not an easy job, but their dedication paid off in full. Even the very first rough draft of the Rondo map turned out to be a move in the right direction: a few bits of precise street layout drifting through the gaps, and even the rough outline of Blaine County are still discernible. This is a map that will subsequently be refined with each stage, as more enthusiasts pay attention and donate their time, and more geographical details will be available for analysis in the form of screenshots.

Thomas Rondo's first attempt at rendering a map of Los Santos, circa January 2012.

So how did they do it? How did they use these out-of-context scraps of information about Los Santos to create an accurate plan - a surprisingly accurate plan, as it turned out later - of a finished city? Yes, Rockstar North is certainly very secretive, but in the hands of the cartographers there was one rather serious source of information on which it is impossible to impose restrictions - Los Angeles.

Los Santos is Los Angeles. It's not just inspired by the latter. This is the real Los Angeles, transformed and perverted by the hands of Rockstar North. And while it's not perfectly accurate, parts of the city look nearly identical and are probably best viewed as a snapshot of Los Angeles' most striking features. All the tourist attractions are in place, but like a Hollywood plastic surgeon, Rockstar removes excess fat: bedroom communities, obscure landmarks, ugly city outskirts. Do this, then mix up the layout of what's left a bit before each street, shop window, or billboard goes through the brand's signature caricature filter, and you start to see what will become Los Santos.

The real Los Angeles gave mapmakers an idea of where the main geographic features how areas of the city should be interconnected. This was much more helpful than the Grand Theft Auto comparison: San Andreas, which bears no more similarities to the modern incarnation than Liberty City in GTA III. However, even though fans had a rough idea of what their final map would look like, they still had to take each screenshot and determine which part of the city it depicted. It does not seem that this information is enough to continue. They need something concrete, some undeniable landmarks that connect the real world to Rockstar's creation.

Attractions. Drive through Los Santos and dozens of notable features of Los Angeles served up in GTA sauce will fly past you: the Vinewood sign is the most obvious of them, but obviously that's all it's notable for us. Next on our list are the skyscrapers of Downtown.

"We defined buildings based on where they are located in real life," explains Rondo. "We identified obvious buildings like US Bank Tower, California Plaza, The Westin Bonaventure [and] started placing these buildings in relation to each other. At the very beginning, we had several maps from different authors. We borrowed ideas from each other."

Look again at the image at the beginning of this article. It's a helicopter hovering over a city that's definitely inspired by Los Angeles, but doesn't make any sense anymore, right? And here is how this screenshot looked in the eyes of cartographers:
And that's before they started scouring Google Streetview for less clear buildings.

"It's like a treasure hunt," says forum member MrThingus, who discovered and identified locations including the Powell Library and the Beverley Hills Peninsula Hotel. can be marked on your own map. Finding the sights before the game even came out gives you that feeling of excitement and excitement that comes with knowing that just a few months or weeks from now, you'll be able to drive through a virtual Los Angeles with a level of detail that few games have ever made."

This excitement, the excitement of anticipation in anticipation, pervades all the efforts of cartographers. They were Rockstar North's most dedicated fans, so eager to experience the world they knew was in store for them that they tried to bring it to life beforehand.

"I think the main motivation for a lot of us was that it was highly anticipated," says cartographer Robert, who goes by the pseudonym lxr on the forum. "You won't be able to play it, as we thought, for at least another half a year. It turned out to be even longer. How would you survive this wait? I think a lot of people did it because it was the only way to visit this map, you know? "

The mapmakers' need to visit Los Santos as soon as possible reflects the sheer, amazing power of the worlds Rockstar is creating. Beneath the surface of their edgy, cartoonish satire, Los Santos and Liberty City somehow blend real-life inspirations with the hyper-real, almost mythical New York and Los Angeles that we know from cinema. It may not be Newk and LA, but it evokes the strongest feeling of these cities, more than many other games attempt to more authentically reproduce any city.

The time spent in Liberty City inspired many to cartography, as mapmaker Koeklin, who started finding points of interest back in GTA 4, recalls.

"I didn't know much about New York," he says, "I knew that Liberty City was inspired by this city, but I had no idea how." Once, when Koeklin was replaying The Snow Storm, a mid-game mission in which Niko Bellic fights his way through the gutted innards of a hospital to recover a stolen bag with cocaine, and found myself wondering about the strangeness of the setting, what was the abandoned hospital doing so close to the glittering lights of Manhattan, okay, Algonquin?

“I thought it was strange that a huge ruined building is located on Colony Island,” he says, “and I wondered if there really was a similar place in New York. I looked in Google Maps and found it without difficulty. It's a smallpox hospital on Roosevelt Island.

"After that, I tried to check a lot of different places and was surprised to find that they are also in New York. I could already see the city like before, I felt like I rediscovered this game for myself. So I naturally identified buildings in Los Santos since the first GTA 5 trailer."

The mapmakers' fondness for these cities is an undeniable rebuttal to any argument that seeks to limit Grand Theft Auto's role to the mayhem that occurs in them. "Killing people, burning [them], grinding with car wheels has never been an interesting thing for me in GTA," concludes Koeklin, "I have a whole city that I can walk around freely. I prefer to play tourist."

The close relationship between Los Santos and Los Angeles must have been a handy tool for those who mapped the city, but what about the countryside? These cartographers have far fewer references to real world, which can be used: here Rockstar began to depict things a little less authentically relative to real life the farther they moved away from the city limits. The countryside in GTA V, the shape it takes, and its location relative to Los Santos has been a big issue for the map project for a relatively long time.

"When I became a contributor a year ago," explains Robert, "we had the city already developed, but the countryside was a big mystery." At that time, no one expected that the Alamo Sea, which is based on the Salton Sea, would be located north of Vinewood. We thought like: "Why on earth would they do that? In real life, it's in the Southwest [USA - translator's note (or mistake, the lake is southeast of Los Angeles)], it can't be!"

Before that fact was established, cartographers, however, went through countless versions. Is the map an island? Or is it several islands? Is Los Santos surrounded by endless auto-generated desert, or invisible walls? And just how vast can rural areas be, what form can they take, how will they really be?

"There were no versions about the size," says Robert, "it was damn hard to figure out what you see [in the screenshot]: how big is it? How many kilometers can it be? Does it end there?"

That's when the mappers realized that Rockstar had given them all the clues they needed.

Early on in the advertising campaign, Rockstar released the following screenshot, which, thanks to the well-known Vinewood sign, could easily be located. But more importantly, at the same time, this screenshot gives us a tantalizing glimpse of rural development outside the city. "This was the first screenshot we had that allowed us to connect the city to what was behind it." Robert remembers.
By itself, however, the screenshot was useless. The perspective and distances made it nearly impossible to judge anything, and well, it was possible to tell how the gloomy countryside behind lay in relation to anything that had already been shown. Those of us who have since played the game must have realized that the Alamo Sea might look sprawling from a distance, but at the time, the contents of that hazy shadow were the subject of fierce debate. The picture was analyzed, discussed many times over and over again, but then left alone.

Until then, Robert takes a closer look at the next screenshot, until this one was released in the same series of screenshots...
...and then things began to make sense.

“If you look at the screenshot of the helicopter you can see the fog in the background,” explains Robert, “what I saw after looking at it for quite some time is if you look at the mountain range in the farthest distance, with three or four ridges, and then look at the screenshot of Trevor, you'll notice there's a mountain here and there in the background, and I found four or five distinguishing features among those ledges that made a perfect match.

It's hard to see because the perspective is different. But once you see that these two images actually share some very unique features, you'll realize that what you see in the Vinewood helicopter screenshot is nothing but the Alamo Sea.

The methods that were used to build a map of the countryside required quite painstaking work. The mapmakers searched the screenshots for distinctive geographical features, and then tried to find the same in other screenshots, gradually building their vision of the San Andreas plan, fastening the screenshots one by one along the chain. It's not as easy as it sounds.

"I really learned a lot about perspective this year by mapping Los Santos," says Robert with a laugh. "Perspective is a terrible bastard. The map is just huge and the closer you are to the ground, the bigger it is. So all those screenshots used very different optics. Sometimes things seem too far away, and in other screenshots taken with a different focal length, they look very close to each other."

"You'll learn about perspective," he continues, "about how you create something. You'll learn about photogrammetry, which is basically the science of taking a photograph of something and then finding out the 3D properties of that object. How do you determine what it is?" straight line? People, myself included, do it wrong all the time."

It doesn't help that Rockstar manipulates their screenshots from time to time, and I'm not just talking about the moment with the oddly altered contrast:

"You can't navigate by the sun!" Robert laughs.

"A lot of our analysis was based on the direction of the sun," Rondo explains, "but we found that the sun wasn't always where it should be. In some of the screenshots, the sun was directly north."

When Rockstar didn't play god to get the lighting they needed in their screenshots, the studio nonetheless had an infuriating habit of continually refining their creation, forcing mapmakers to tweak their maps in response. And, of course, the speculative constructions of cartographers constantly ran into many options for not subordinating the natural geography of San Andreas to the laws of the real world.

"There was a case where two buildings, I think, were moved over time," says Robert, "we realized that not much had changed on the map. But you still had to be careful in your conclusions all the time. At the Alamo Sea nothing flows in. We thought there would be one - but it turned out there is not one. There is a reservoir up there, but there had to be mountains around it for it to be a full-fledged reservoir, right? No. You need to apply logic, but sometimes it's game logic, " he explained.

However, the compilers have finished off this card, as seen in Rondo's gif showing the evolution of their efforts, no doubt showing.

They were so close, in fact, that when the official map eventually leaked earlier this year, many players didn't believe the revelation: the real map was suspiciously close to the fan-made map they'd seen a few weeks earlier.

"It wasn't surprising, we were sure we were close," says Robert with a well-deserved indiscretion, "it was obvious that we did it. Because there was a trailer showing a robbery that actually showed parts of the map. More before anything leaked into the net."

The mapmakers haven't finished yet. Even now they are scouring the game world (and Google Streetview) to find every architectural composition down to the last and find its real source. It's no surprise that the mapping project has irrevocably changed the way its members relate to the game, since they certainly know the way through the intricacies of San Andreas as well as its creators.

Robert froze when I asked what it would be like to finally set foot on Los Santos and the surrounding countryside. And he told.

"Fuck...it's...really weird to actually have that option...because, you know, because there were so many places on the map where I was like, 'oh, I wish I could turn the camera on ten degrees in that screenshot"...and suddenly being able to just go there... that's great. It's really great. Being able to drive around this map is fantastic. It's exciting... The first thing I did in the game was get a car and drove around the map, very slowly." Robert explained.

He wanted to see how everything fit together, the way he knew it should be, the way he and all the other mappers had identified. But he also had a specific destination in mind.

“I knew about the railway bridge,” says Robert calmly, “we didn’t have a picture of it, we only saw both ends of it, where the highway and the railway tracks were on opposite sides of each other. It was obvious that there should be a bridge .. "It was really fun to see what it actually looked like. Nobody knew what it looked like, but I knew it was there."

For most of us, stepping out onto the tanned streets of Los Santos last week was the beginning of an adventure: the beginning of an endless exploration. But what is it for mapmakers? This was the end of their long journey home.

The attempt to create a map of Los Santos was made possible thanks to the active collaboration of many people whom I want to address. City GTA 5 - Los Santos

Description:

Los Santos is a fictional city located in the southeastern United States in Los Santos County, San Andreas. Los Santos is the setting for a GTA game for the second time, first appearing in 2004 in GTA: San Andreas. The new version of Los Santos is larger, better detailed and looks even more alive than before. The prototype of Los Santos was Los Angeles with its vast suburbs. Los Santos means "saints" in Spanish, which is an allusion to Los Angeles, which translates as "angels".

Like its prototype, Los Santos is a giant, bustling metropolis, a city of people of all sorts: from wealthy filmmakers in Vinewood to blacks from the ghetto in Strawberry. As in Liberty City from GTA IV, the time in Los Santos is the same as it was when the game was released in 2013.

Los Santos in the 2013 version can be divided into 4 large zones: North, East, West and South; each zone is divided into districts. Los Santos has three self-governing cities: Davis, Del Pierro, and Rockford Hills.

Not far from the city is Los Santos International Airport, one of the busiest airports in the world. In addition, Los Santos has a developed system public transport covering the entire city.

Los Santos - main city Los Santos County and the Los Santos metropolitan area.

Districts/quarters

Central Los Santos
The districts of central Los Santos are the heart of the city. To the north, this area is bordered by the Del Pierro Freeway, the La Puerta Freeway to the west, and the Olympic Freeway to the east. This part of the city is characterized by the highest level of urbanization, here are the tallest skyscrapers in the city, including the Labyrinth Bank Tower.
  • Downtown Los Santos (Downtown Los Angeles)
  • Textile City (Fashion District)
  • Mission Row (Skid Row)
  • Pillbox Hill (Bunker Hill)
  • Lijn Square (Pershing Square)

North Los Santos

North Los Santos consists of neighborhoods that stretch from Downtown to Vinewood Hills on the northern edge of the city. This is the place of life of the richest people in Los Santos, large private houses are located here - the most prestigious and expensive housing in the city. Among other celebrities, Poppy Mitchell lives in North Los Santos. Michael De Santa's home is also located here.
  • Alta (Chinatown)

South Central is where you can find the cheapest accommodation. Garbage is constantly piled on the sides of the local streets, and gangs, like the one called the Families, live on the streets themselves. The Port and Docks of Los Santos are also considered part of South Los Santos. The brightest areas of South Los Angeles, Inglewood and Long Beach, which were in GTA:SA, are mostly absent in GTA V. However, their appearance is partially recreated in other areas of Los Santos.

East Los Santos

The western border of East Los Santos is the Los Santos Freeway and the city sewer, in the east this zone rests on the Tataviam Mountains and mountain range Palomino. East Los Santos is mostly inhabited by Hispanics, most of them immigrants from Mexico. As well as South Los Santos, the East is infested with criminals, tourists are warned to stay away from there even during the day. This place contrasts sharply with the wealthy North (East Vinewood and Mirror Park), where the elite lives and middle class. East Central (El Burro Heights, Murrieta Heights, and La Mesa) is inhabited by workers, while heavy industries are located in the southern areas.

  • Los Santos International Airport (LA)
  • Port of Los Santos (Port of Los Angeles)

Important roads/streets

Los Santos is also known for its awfully dense traffic and poorly designed roads. It is said that the traffic in Los Santos is so slow that one woman decided to use the car in turns with a dead man (?). However, Los Santos has a developed system of elevated highways, federal highways and highways passing through the city. People use them day and night.

There are many ways to get around Los Santos: there is a system of wide highways and several smaller highways, equipped with a system of exits and arrivals throughout the city. The city also has its own fast travel network called Los Santos Transit. In addition, buses can be seen among city traffic. Like most cities, traffic in Los Santos is managed by the local Traffic Control System, which monitors traffic lights and traffic.

Los Santos International Airport is located in the south of Los Santos and is the only airport in the city.

Education

Many schools and other educational institutions have been built in Los Santos. The most famous is the University of San Andreas, where the most privileged students receive prestigious professions. There is also a Los Santos junior school for children, where they gain the basic skills they need in life. Sue Murry used to teach here. The city of Davis has a high school.
  • Davis High School (Compton High School)
  • Los Santos Junior High
  • San Andreas State University (University of California, Los Angeles)

  • Eclipse Medical Center (Sunset Medical Center)
  • Mount Zone Medical Center (Cedars-Sinai Medical Center)
  • St. Fiacre Hospital

Police
