Is it worth going to the Dead Sea? What is the best way to get from Jerusalem to the Dead Sea? Tourist season in Israel

The first question that arises when preparing a trip to the Dead Sea is which city is better to choose: Ein Bokek or Neve Zohar? We preferred Neve Zohar, located three kilometers away, to the Ein Bokek hotel complex. These two hotel complex located very close to each other and from one to the other you can easily walk along the embankment.

The hotel was chosen on the service Booking.com Particular attention here should be paid to super offers, the discount of which sometimes reaches 70%. There are also 4-5 in Neve Zohar star hotels, such as Leonardo Privilege Dead Sea and Herods Dead Sea, but we opted for one of the Zimmers. And I must say we didn’t regret it.

Zimmers in Israel are something like a cottage with a separate entrance and veranda. We immediately liked Zimmer. A large veranda, on the veranda there is a table, chairs, barbecue and even a sink with warm water supply and a work area. In general, all conditions have been created for cooking in the fresh air. The main thing is not to forget to bring this very food with you, otherwise in Ein Bokek the prices for food and water are, to put it mildly, steep.

The inside of the Zimmer is clean and very cozy, there is a double bed, a wardrobe for things and clothes, a dressing table and a coffee table, a flat-screen TV and wifi. The kitchenette is equipped with a refrigerator, microwave, kettle, sink, cabinets and utensils. The bathroom has a bath, shower, toilet and everything you need... Well, what else do people need who have decided to relax for a couple of days without extra costs?

I must say that we were very lucky with the price; August was the hottest month in Israel and the discounts on accommodation were quite decent. As a result, two days of accommodation in the Zimmer cost $120.

In August it is certainly hot at the Dead Sea. We were passing through and tried to swim in the sea for about three or four days. The sensations must be said to be supernatural. It feels like you are walking into a heavy oily liquid that is hotter than air. And this despite the fact that the air temperature here at this time of year rarely falls below + 45.

As you know, the coast is the lowest piece of land on Earth and is located at more than 400 m below sea level. In this regard, the atmospheric pressure in this area is noticeably increased, and the oxygen content in the air is 15% higher than at any other point globe. The air here is unusually clean, a kind of natural pressure chamber, saturated with bromine vapor.

At the same time, you can sunbathe at the Dead Sea as much as you like, but you still won’t get burned. And all thanks to an additional 400 meter layer of air, saturated with water vapor and minerals, creating a protective filter barrier against harmful ultraviolet rays.

But we decided that we would go to the sea early from 7 to 10 in the morning, while it was not so hot. And in the evening from 6 to 8 o'clock. During the night and in the evening the water manages to cool down a little and no longer seems so hot.

The public beach in Nove Zohar is located next to the Herods Dead Sea Hotel. From Zimmer to the beach it takes about five minutes by car.

The beach, I must say, is quite good. It’s clean, there are lifeguards, a toilet and a changing room. But the most important thing is that there is salt there and the shore is not covered with sand like on most other beaches. You walk in and see under your feet that the bottom actually consists of salt!!! This has been a rarity for beaches lately. Dead Sea.

If you really look at it this way, then the Dead Sea is not the most salt Lake On the Earth. However, it is the mineral composition of the Dead Sea that is considered the most unique and has a healing effect on the human body.

Dead Sea minerals are capable of restoring health and youth to people and have the highest therapeutic effect in the world. Water and mud are especially effective in treating skin diseases, including practically untreatable ones such as psoriasis.

Three kilometers from Neve Zohar is the resort of Ein Bokek, a city with a developed tourist infrastructure. There are more than a dozen hotels, hospitals, SPA salons, shopping centers, and entertainment venues there. In the shopping centers of Ein Bokek, prices for Dead Sea cosmetics are much lower than in other places. And here you can buy Jerusalem candles inexpensively.

The Dead Sea resorts in Israel are not so numerous, but before the trip it is better to find out the features of each in order to independently choose where it is best to relax. The article contains photos and general description the main resort of Ein Bokek on the Dead Sea and others.

Dead Sea resorts in Israel - list and general conditions

You need to understand that the resorts located on the Dead Sea are not cities and, sometimes, not even villages. In fact, in Israel there is only one resort on the Dead Sea as such - the hotel village of Ein Bokek, with a stretch you can add the neighborhood of Neve Zohar and Ein Gedi, and there are also small hotels and guest houses in the area of kibbutzim Kalia and Metzok Dragot. And I would also like to highlight the city of Arad, although it is located 25 km from the Dead Sea, it has its own advantages, which we will discuss further.

Dead Sea resorts on the map of Israel and Jordan:

And now I’ll tell you about each of them in more detail.

Beaches of Ein Bokek

There are about seven private hotel beaches and one free public beach in Ein Bokek. In my opinion, these are the most well-groomed and nice beaches Dead Sea. When we were in Israel (January 2016), the beaches of the Ein Bokek resort on the Dead Sea were being renovated and refreshed with red sand.

There is a detailed article about it with descriptions and prices.

The shops

IN resort village Ein Bokek has three small shopping centers: Petra Shopping Center, Sky Blue Shopping Center and Ein Bokek Shopping Center. They have cosmetics, clothing, souvenir shops, jewelry stores and grocery minimarkets. In minimarkets you can buy chocolate bars, cookies, chips, alcohol, etc. You shouldn't count on anything more significant. As for prices in grocery stores, in the minimarket in Petra Shopping Center they were about 20% higher than, say, in Jerusalem, and in the minimarket in Sky Blue Shopping Center they were slightly cheaper than in mall Petra.

Cafe And restaurants

At the resort you can visit McDonald's, the oriental-style cafe-bar Taj Mahal, adjacent to the Leonardo Inn hotel, the Quatro bar and the Cafe-Cafe, Aroma and others. Neve Zohar Resort (Hamei Zohar)

The Neve Zohar resort is located 1-2 km north of the kibbutz of the same name in a place called Hamei Zohar. In fact, this resort is a continuation of Ein Bokek, which is located very close - just 3 km to the north.

There are only 3 hotels in the Neve Zohar (Hamei Zohar) resort, one of which operates on an All Inclusive basis. There are beaches in the area of these hotels. Two of them belong to hotels, one to a spa center and part-time Premier cosmetics store, and one to a public one.

Hotels in Neve Zohar resort

A kilometer from the three hotels is Kibbutz Neve Zohar itself - a very small village on the shores of the Dead Sea.

Below is the entire village of Neve Zohar

Neve Zohar has several guest houses and rooms. There is no beach in the kibbutz itself (the nearest 1.5 km is at the hotels), but some still manage to swim here.

You can swim in Neve Zohar only behind those hotels

Ein Gedi Resort - an oasis near the Dead Sea

Israel's resorts on the Dead Sea also include Kibbutz Ein Gedi, which is located near the reserve of the same name. The settlement has:

  • Spa hotel Ein Gedi Kibbutz Hotel in the kibbutz and HI Ein Gedi Hostel near the Ein Gedi nature reserve.
  • SPA-center.
  • 1 public and 1 paid beach from the Spa.
  • Village infrastructure (canteen, shops).

Kibbutz Ein Gedi is located in an oasis a little away from the shores of the Dead Sea, a few kilometers from the beach. From the Ein Gedi Spa Hotel there is a shuttle service to the beach during the day.

Kibbutz Kalia area

The northern beaches of the Dead Sea are 40 km from Jerusalem. The archaeological site of the ancient manuscripts of Qumran is located nearby. Here are:

  • Bars and cosmetics and souvenir shops on the beaches.

The area is more suitable for a day visit from Tel Aviv and Jerusalem.

Kalia Beach, Bianchini and Neve Midbar

Area of Kibbutz Mitzpe Shalem and Metzouk Dragot

Kibbutzim Mitzpe Shalem and Metzouk Dragot are located in the middle of the Northern Salt Lake Basin. These are far from the Dead Sea resorts, but in this area you can find:

  • Metzoke Dragot Hostel, which has both standard rooms and mattresses in a 10-person tent for budget travelers. It’s better not to stay here without a car, as there is a five-kilometer uphill climb to the hostel.
  • Paid beach Mineral with natural mud. From 01/01/2015 temporarily closed for repairs due to ground failures. As of January 2016, still not operational.
  • Factory of the famous Dead Sea cosmetics Ahava.

Suitable for a one-day stop when traveling along the Dead Sea, and even then not now.

Arad is the cleanest city in the world

The city of Arad is also often referred to as the Dead Sea resort in Israel. It is located at an altitude of 600 m above sea level. The distance from Arad to Neve Zohar is 25 km and to the resort of Ein Bokek – 30 km. By the way, most of the employees of these resorts live in Arad. There are also health clinics and spa centers at some hotels, and the holiday can be more homely if you rent an apartment or house.

Well-kept town of Arad

Pros:

  • On many tourist portals there is information that from an environmental point of view, according to UNESCO, Arad was recognized as the cleanest city on earth. This is especially important for people with allergies and respiratory diseases.
  • Infrastructure of a residential city. Accordingly, prices in shops and cafes are not inflated for tourists. At least there is no shortage of these establishments.
  • Choose from a large number of housing in different price ranges. These are not only hotels, but also guest houses, cottages, apartments where you can arrange a family vacation at home.
  • The air here is drier, making it easier for asthmatics to breathe.
  • Rest and treatment in Arad (with trips to the Dead Sea) can be cheaper than in Ein Bokek. The difference will be especially felt if you stay at coastal resorts for more than a week.
  • A decent portion of the city’s population are Russian-speaking Israelis.

Minuses:

  • One very big minus is the distance from the coast by 25 km. Actually, because of this it is difficult to call Arad a Dead Sea resort. This problem can be solved in three ways: 1) renting a car; 2) an agreement with the owner of the property on delivery free of charge or for a small fee using his transport; 3) public transport, to the Dead Sea resorts go buses 384, 421 - 16 shekels. ($4.2) to Neve Zohar, 21.5 shekels. ($5.6) to Ein Bokek (see schedule egged carrier website).

⚠ Some people think that the road from the Dead Sea to Arad is very difficult and serpentine. As for me, there is nothing so scary about it: a good, wide, winding road with beautiful views.

Accommodation in Arad can be found in several ways:

  • Rent a hotel online. For those who do not know how this is done, I have prepared an article:.
  • Rent an apartment or house from a private owner through the airbnb website. To get a discount on your booking of $15-35 (promotions change periodically and may soon be canceled altogether), you must first register at this invitation link. Then type “Arad” in the search window and select your expected vacation dates. The offers on this site are amazing. We ourselves have rented apartments through Airbnb many times, including in Israel, and we also successfully saved money by taking advantage of the discount. Our experience was described in the article: .

Where is the best place to relax in the Dead Sea - my conclusions

My opinion is that if you go to the Dead Sea for one day without an overnight stay, you can stay at any of the above resorts and hotels, depending on your location and the transport you use. Kibbutzim Ein Gedi, Neve Zohar and Ein Bokek are suitable for 2-3 days. For treatment and rest for a period of more than three days, I would choose the resort of Ein Bokek or the neighboring Hamei Zohar (1 km from Kibbutz Neve Zohar) with their hotels operating on an all-inclusive or half-board basis. If living on the seashore is not essential, then for relaxation and treatment for a long period I would definitely consider the city of Arad.

Be sure to read the article about, in which I spoke in detail about possible expenses during the trip.

Dead Sea resorts on the map of Israel and Jordan

I have prepared a map of the Dead Sea resorts in Israel and Jordan, which also shows beaches, hotels, spas and clinics. If you click on an object, you will see GPS coordinates dots and a link to the site (if available).

It's false to believe, but for many centuries people avoided settling in the areaDead Sea. All attempts to swim across the mysterious body of water ended in failure. Although the sea received its ominous name for other reasons. One liter of water containsup to 350g of various salts. It’s not for nothing that the name in Hebrew sounds like yam amelach, which translated means Salt Sea. In the clear, oily waters of the Dead Sea, living organisms, apart from bacteria, are not able to survive. But at the beginning of the last century, the situation changed dramatically and the calm surfaces of the salty sea, like floats, were dotted with the bodies of vacationers.

Even now there are not many settlements in the lifeless Judean desert, only numerous hotels rise on the coast. That's why Difficult to reach by public transport. If you are planning to visit the Dead Sea on your own, there are several options for how to get there.

Coming from Jerusalem bus number 486. And from the center of the country you will have to travel with transfers. It is better to book a one-day tour, it will cost about $50.

Often, except beach holiday, the program includes a visit to the mountain Massada and the reserve Ein Gedi. However, daylight hours are not flexible and it is better to prioritize. Part of our group, which went sightseeing, did not have time to experience all the delights of a beach holiday. Although, to be honest, there is not much entertainment on a deserted beach.

There are just over ten beaches on the Israeli side of the coast, most of them public, as swimming elsewhere can be life-threatening.

A mandatory stop on the way to the beach is a store with cosmetic products. And here it is important to show all your willpower and refrain from shopping, especially if this is your first time in the country. The fact is that prices here are several times higher than on the market Carmel in Tel Aviv. The same package of salt or dirt can be bought in any store in another city for much less. In addition, efficient Bedouins sell healing mud collected nearby for 5-10 shekels per bag. One portion is enough to completely cover your body with healing clay and turn into an ebony man for half an hour. And on some beaches you can get mud yourself.

Holidays at the Dead Sea

When going to the Dead Sea, do not neglect advice grab rubber slippers. Travel agencies do not always warn you which beach they will take you to. If you are lucky, you will enter the sea on sand, but there is a possibility that the bottom will be rocky.

Walking on the salt formations, which are more reminiscent of coral, is practically impossible, so your feet will need protection. For many, when they see the surface of the sea, a natural reflex is triggered - to plop into the water with a run... Dead Sea this scenario won't work. In practice, getting into the water is not so easy, and from the outside, such a dive looks quite funny. The density of water, at the lowest point on the planet, is ten times higher than normal. And the water categorically prevents the body from sinking, pushing the person to the surface.

It is worth noting that all the beaches here are equipped with special slopes with railings for people with special needs. You can experience the joy of weightlessness at sea and enjoy the truly Martian landscape that opens from the sea only within 20 minutes. Due to the high concentration of salts and minerals, it is not recommended for a living organism to be in water more often three sessions per day, 20 minutes each. After every bath it is necessary wash off the salt with fresh water. For this purpose, free showers are installed on the beaches.

Video: It's very interesting to see what swimming in the Dead Sea looks like.

In addition, it is no coincidence that these oily waters are uninhabited: drinking a glass of water from the Dead Sea can be fatal. Therefore, the holiday here is quiet and orderly. And if one of the vacationers nevertheless swallowed water, then he definitely needs to see a doctor.

Historical landmarks

Israelis travel to the resort by their own transport. The most popular beaches are in the area Ein Bokek. There is a flat bottom and along the way there is an opportunity to see the main attractions.

The road from Tel Aviv takes just over two hours, half of which will involve driving through picturesque rocky terrain. Along the road there are huge digital signs informing you how many meters below the world's oceans you are. By the way, the microclimate in this part of the world is very special, which allows you to swim all year round, and the air can even cure asthma.

Masada Fortress

Here and there in the lifeless Judean desert there are small oases of palm trees, but tourists are primarily attracted by the legendary fortress Masada, rising on one of the rocks.

King Herod built a defensive point at an altitude of 450 m above the Dead Sea. But the Romans tried to take impregnable fortress siege and, when the residents realized that supplies of water and food were running out, they chose ten people by lot who had to kill everyone, including themselves, so as not to surrender to the enemy.

Hardy tourists paying 7 dollars, can climb the mountain on foot, overcoming a steep climb. And for 18 American rubles you can get to the ruins of Herod’s palace by ski lift.

The landscape opening from the mountain is truly breathtaking: the Martian relief is broken only by the blue ribbon of the Dead Sea, above which the Jordanian mountains rise on the other side.

Sodom

The next destination is known to everyone - Sodom. The sinful city was located a few kilometers from the Dead Sea and now only a sign above a deserted pit reminds of past debauchery.

Important nuance

The Dead Sea has not been fully studied and, despite the fact that it is shrinking every year, the mysterious body of water never ceases to amaze scientists. The latest surprises in this area cannot be called pleasant. This fall on the beach Shanti in natural pits filled with water from mineral springs, the temperature of the water rose sharply and people taking baths at this time received burns. After the first incident, these pits were fenced off; according to preliminary data, the temperature jump occurred due to the emergence of a new hot spring. But until everything is fully understood, better be careful and limit yourself to swimming in the sea itself.

The Dead Sea lies 410 meters below sea level, so the atmospheric pressure in this area is higher than normal averages and is approximately 800 mm Hg. Art.

In addition, the maximum width of the Jordan Depression is no more than 25 km, and the height of the slopes (very steep in places) reaches 1000-1400 meters. That is, there are all the conditions for the special climate in this area. And if in the southern part of Israel the climate is tropical and subtropical, then the climate of the Dead Sea is dry desert: 90% of the time (almost 330 days a year) the sun shines here, and the average annual precipitation is 50-60 mm.

Weather at the Dead Sea by month

In the winter months, temperatures reach a minimum of +12-13°C, and in summer maximums range from +27-39°C.

The Dead Sea in July and August warms up to an average of +34-35°C, and the average daytime air temperature is +38-39°C (but can rise to +45-47°C). The Dead Sea in September is very warm (+32-33°C), and during the day in the sun the thermometer shows up to +35-37°C.

The Dead Sea in October “cools down” to +29-30°C (with an average daily air temperature of +32°C), and the Dead Sea in November is pleasantly invigorating: the water temperature is +23-25°C. And the weather at the Dead Sea in November is very comfortable: the average air temperature during the day does not rise to more than +26-27°C, and at night it does not fall below +18°C.

At the same time, air humidity almost does not exceed 40% in winter and autumn, and in summer it drops to 23%. In autumn and spring, winds blow along the Jordan from the Red Sea. In winter and spring, there is a risk of flooding on rainy days when rainwater from relatively remote areas of the Jerusalem Mountains flows into the Dead Sea basin.

The Dead Sea in December (water temperature in the middle of the day) and daytime air temperature are usually the same - on average +22°C, but at night the thermometer drops to +13°C.

So the swimming season at the Dead Sea is year-round! And to the question - when is the best time to go to the Dead Sea - doctors answer: for patients with psoriasis in remission, the recommended treatment time is the period from May to September, and during the period of exacerbation - from October to April.

Weather in Jordan at the Dead Sea

The weather in Jordan on the Dead Sea is determined by the same factors as in Israel, although on Jordanian territory the depth of the Dead Sea relative to the level of the world ocean is less - 394.6 meters.

In Jordan, in the Dead Sea area, air temperatures during the winter months can range from +7-8°C (it does not happen lower) to maximum values of +18-20°C.

In April-May, the maximum daily temperature is +25-27°C; in summer the air warms up to +29°C in June and to + 35°C in August. It rains in this country from October to March (heaviest rainfall occurs in December and January). But in the Dead Sea area, precipitation is extremely low: even in the rainiest season (December-March), the level rarely exceeds 5 mm per month.

The weather at the Dead Sea (in Hebrew, Hamelach Yam)—at any time of the year—is conducive to relaxation and the treatment of a wide range of diseases. Hurry to take advantage of the natural forces of the Dead Sea, because, as environmentalists note, the water level in it is decreasing by about 30 cm per year - due to the industry and agriculture of Israel and Jordan. And some scientists predict that by 2050 the unique reservoir may dry up...
