Railways Finland.

A small review of Finland railways.

About the railway network as a whole. The first difference between Finnish railways from other European countries is of course the width of the rut. She is here 1524 mm, that is, the same as on the expanses former USSR, not 1435, as in the uncrowded Europe. The rolling stock due to this sewn, respectively, in the wagons is spacious. Since the width of the rut is one, then in Finland, freight cars from Russia can directly. Russian cars I saw quite a lot. The railway network is sufficiently thick in the south of the country, and completely sparse in the north of the country, which, however, logical is the main part of the country's population concentrated in the south. "Deck" in the south of course relative, the density of the railways is much less than in the countries of Central Europe. The main lines are electrified with a change in 25 kV 50 hertz. There are several border crossings with neighboring countries, with Sweden and with Russia. Through the border crossing with Psub, as I understood, there is only a cargo movement, there is a bunch (four-way path), several border crossings with Russia, the main thing is Vainikkala - Buslovskaya.

Cargo traffic. Apparently, not very intense, freight trains is practically not visible. Basic loads are a forest and raw materials from Russia - there are Russian tanks, half-haul, covered cargo wagons.

Passenger traffic. The main lines are a triangle: the border of Russia - Vainikkala - Helsinki - Turku - Tampere. The most intense long-distance traffic between Helsinki and Tampere. This line is an electrified two-day all over, there are several passenger trains per hour, with the exception of the night break for 3-4 hours. Turku - Helsinki on average one train per hour. Turku - Tampere about one train every two hours. There are several types of trains, these are high-speed "pendalo", intersis, express, well, and local trains. There is a night train "Santa Claus Express" from Helsinki in Kemiyarvi in Lapland with modern bedroom double-decker cars. Live composition different years Issue But the trains are clean, it's nice to ride. Speeds are quite high, Turku-Tampere, the usual no interxist train held an average of 120-140 kmh, Tampere - Helcinki The usual train was often 160 kmh, "Pendolino" is also 160 kmh, in some areas up to 220 km.

Prices. They are high enough, on average at the level of other countries Western Europe. For example, Tampere - Helsinki, a distance of about 180 kilometers. Ticket prices Suite: Pendalino -36.5 euro, travel time for 1 hour 30 minutes, intersisati - 31 euros 1 hour 45 minutes, local train 24 euros and on the way 2 hours. As can be seen, the time difference is not fundamental to pay 1.5 times more expensive. I drove on the local train. If you take a ticket for the week and earlier, it will cost about 10% cheaper. There are still some special offers. Prices and schedule can be viewed on a good site: http://www.vr.fi/ There is English and Russian versions.

Well, enough scribble, look at the pictures :)

Station in Turku.

Intersiti Train Turku - Helsinki at Turku Station. Modern electric locomotive class SR2 "Guinea pig" of the Swiss building. In total, Finnov 46 such cars. From its Swiss gangs (SBB RE 460) is characterized by a width of a gauge, a current and auto-3 motor arms. Part of the machines of this type is equipped with a combined coupling (CA-3 and screw tie). Basically, the electric locomotives of this type are tested by the trains of Intersitsea, usually these are six two-storey wagons. Coloring in Finns looks beautiful, contrasting white-red or white-green.

Train Turku - Tampere and Eletrovozoz SR1. Electric locomotives SR1 of Soviet buildings are the most numerous on Finnish railway, all the Finns 110 such cars. Constructed at the Novocherkassian electric-building factory from 1973 to 1985. Universal locomotives used in both the passenger and cargo movement. Despite the honorable age, they run enough quickly, this train held the speed of 140 km. Knew how to do sometime :)

Fragment of schedule to Turku. In Finland, two states of the language are Finnish and Swedish, and they completely dislikes each other. For example, the city of Turku in the Swedish ABO. The schedule is written in two languages.

Machine for the sale of tickets. Beale is bought easily and quickly. Of course, there is a menu in English. You can only pay for cards, cash only in the usual key. My German Maestro automatic accepted without problems.

Lokomotiv SR1 and train Turku - Tampere. SA-3 motor arms are not installed on all locomotives, and with screw screeds are found.

Cars-restaurant!

Route plate and car room. Surprised that the train tickets were with places.

Inside. Finnish wagon sewn of his European fellow, here is spacious.

Landscapes outside the window are very reminded by Russia, only clean everything. Forests are a lot. Mostly coniferous breeds and birch. In the south of Finland, the climate is softer, and already allows you to grow some cereal cultures.

The train led by the old Soviet electric locomotive SR1 fled very quickly, often 140 kmh, as can be seen by GPS.

Another view from the window.

Fight from two "pendolino" in Tampere. Each train consists of six wagons. Coloring or white-green or white-red.

Train Intersisati with Electrovoz SR2.

Helsinki's night train - Kemiyarvi. Modern two-storey sleeping cars, in some coupe there are even a shower. Wagons of Finnish production.

The train is made up of both two-storey and ordinary cars.

And the carriages for transportation of cars arrived at the back.

Station names are always in two languages. Funny Christmas trees are drawn on the wagons.

Alstomovsky electric train class SM4. I was driving on such from Tampere in Helsinki. Complete set of 2 + 3 seats, rarity on European railways. As a rule, it is 2 + 2. But the Finnish rut is wider, respectively, the wagons are also wider.

Some stations are wooden.

Views from the window. Line Tampere - Helsinki.

Russian policemen.

Locomotive.

Electric train SM4 at the station in Helsinki.

Interior of the two-storey car in Inssisiti trains. Convenient, spacious, clean. But it seems to me that there is too little luggage in a two-story car, because it is not regional train And people are routing with baggage, and on such shelves the bag is hardly possible.

The car has a special room for telephone conversations. Nowhere has not seen this.

Stairs.

There are 220V sockets.

Train stations in Helsinki. Many new Swiss Stadlers.

In Finland, stadlers have the designation SM5.

There are also more references, SM1 and SM2 classes, which were produced in 1968-181.

Station in Helsinki.

Platforms.

Electrovoz SR2.

Trains Allegro run between St. Petersburg and Helsinki. This is a multi-mounted 25kV + 3kV "Pendolino". Time on the way to date 3 hours 36 minutes. In my opinion, a good alternative to the aircraft. Four couples day.

And finally, the bonus track is the rail transport of Helsinki.

Metro. In Helsinki, one metro line with a developing. In the center passes underground but most of the path passes through the surface. There are no turnstiles in the subway. On the metro and other types of transport, a single urban ticket is taking place. Direct one day costs 7 euros.

And a few pictures of trams. Old model.

Most an interesting route: 3B and 3T, passes "eight" through the city center and station. And along the path, the tram suddenly changes the number. At first, looking at the scheme, it seems that without a bottle there will not discern but then enlightening comes.

New model tram, multisective "caterpillar". They are low-profile, quieter and inside the air conditioner works. By the way, once checked tickets. The controllers went on one to each door. So it is not recommended to ride without a ticket.

I liked the transport in Finland, only a little expensive.

Most recently, the story of the blogger DOCENT.LIVEJOURNAL.COM, dedicated to the station in Helsinki, Finland, appeared on the site's pages of the site.
Now the author shares his impressions of the railway journey (and even with its own car) in Finland, admiring the service and the cost of services of Finnish carriers and comparing them with Russian.
As always, the story is accompanied by a detailed photo report. In the recent auto desk in Finland, it was decided to make part of the railway path. There you can travel on the train right with your car!

And by the way, you know that recently and from Moscow also became possible to come to Helsinki on the train of Russian Railways? For some 664 euros, you get a ticket to the car there and back, the shelf in a 4-bed coupe without sockets and a key, with three unfamiliar passengers, whatever you bored on the road, and the dream of the soul at the end of the trip.
Ask "Why do I need a ticket back and forth"? Did not determine the exact date of the end of the trip? Or think to visit the grandmother in St. Petersburg on the way back and uncle on Valdai, bring them a full trunk of cloudberries and a box of Lapland cheese? Forget! Railways carefully will save you from the tedious trip behind the wheel!
And also give you a double refreshing night walk on the early distress of border stations Buslovskaya and Vainikkala, for the inspection of your car border guards, which are unlikely to find something there, because Russian Railways have already taken care and that all your things you know know everything in a compartment , And inspection, it's just a pretext, well, just that I could breathe air, useful, they say before bedtime.

However, let's go about everything in order, because I still wanted to tell you about Finnish trains!

I would like to remind you historical fact, Suddenly, who forgot him: the first railways in Finland appeared with the filing of the Russian side, because when the locomotive was invented, Finland was still part of the Russian Empire, and therefore, the width of the rut is, as well as throughout Russia 1520/1524 mm.
After the revolution, when Finland became an independent country, Russian rails became part of the Finnish railway. The Finns did not move onto a pan-European rut standard of 1435 mm, and the Soviet Union, until 1985, supplied them electric locomotives built at the Novocherkassian factory, they still ride our northern neighbors. Otherwise, how two parts of the once single network became similar to each other during this time!

By the way, surprised that the Soviet electric locomotives also perform the role of a maneuver locomotive.

From Russia to Finland can be reached by Russian Railways trains, including a direct night train Moscow-Helsinki "Lev Tolstoy", as well as the recently launched high-speed train "Allegro"operating in the direction of St. Petersburg-Helsinki.
Distance in 1108 kilometers This train overcomes in 14 hours, a ticket to the usual 4-seater coupe costs 107 euros. The coupe of this train did not detect an electrical outlet to recharge the laptop, in addition, there was no possibility, as in most russian trains, Go to a restaurant car (or even just to the toilet) closing the compartment compartment. In this case, I, of course, have a "truder", but what to do with strangers on the coupe? I can and paranoid, things do not bother. Fortunately, I usually drive not alone and you can leave someone "on the suitcases."

Once I had to ride some more modern carThere were also sockets, and even a TV, which truth showed only interference. There were still automatic doors, vacuum toilets and other elements of civilization. True, as they say, one added, another, for some reason removed: in this modern car there were no "RUNDUKES" (such drawers under the bottom shelves, threw the bags there and sleep at them calmly, no one at night in a quiet thing in quiet). But most importantly, there were electronic locks in those coupe! True, the keys were not issued to them. The conductor said, almost all or lost them or walked, and they do not supply new from the plant. Well, you understood, "I still have our own, our Rasha."

Another time I went from Moscow to Prague in the Eurovantlets, rIC standard. There was even a sink in the coupe. But their main lack of them were that such a coupe was triple and very close. As they say, neither God candle, nor hell of a kocherga, but if you go threesome, and there is not very large-sized, then normal.
It looked like such a compartment ...

I don't want to talk about the reserved sequarters from Russian Railways, I didn't go to them for a hundred years and as much as I was not going for a minimum. Especially, after a trip to the "Plazcarpe" of the Finnish train.
Someone will probably honor me now, and say, not well spoiled, the whole country in such trains is more than half a century and nothing. And since such glamorous, here are the wagons of Russian Railways in which even toilets with a shower in the coupe! Yeah. Yes Yes. I know such cars.
It looks like such a compartment ...

There are such coupe seems to be in the train "Lion Tolstoy", Moscow-Helsinki, but it's worth it is a pleasure worth 23 with horseradish thousands of rubles. One way! True for the whole coupe. Here the dear reader will exclaim, the bugger from irritation, "Yes, you completely lit up! Want to comfort, boarding grandmother! "... quietly, calm, dear. Just breathe deeply and keep reading.

The cars, by the way, are transported by Finland here in such auto ...

Let's now remember about railways service with car transportation. Cars for car transportation are also cling to "Lero Tolstoy." In other directions, the service is not yet offered, though, I believe that she could be quite in demand, I would prefer myself to get to some cities with a car in a train and then to have complete independent freedom of movement. If it were not for price realities.
Wait, do not open the RZD.ru website, I have already collected all the data. Or, no, open it in the new tab of the browser and see, otherwise I suddenly believe me. Yes, by the way, write me how much time did you get from the moment of opening the site before the discovery of this information? And then open the site vr.fi, and repeat the same action there. For the most advanced users, try booking a ticket here and there, especially in the "coupe + car" format and share your impressions.

Now read black on the White on the Railways website: 450 Euro For the transportation of the car there and back. A plus 4 Euro for the reservation of transportation, and 0.3 Euro For every 100 euro announced car value. And this is very important: the car can be issued only there and back.
That is, you need to predetermine the duration of the trip and the day of return. Do not ride both if you planned to return from Finland by your car. By the way, the customs regulations, as far as I know, prohibit from the country of the European Union without a car, leaving it there, but she will leave or by their passage or by train, I do not remember such a clarification. Maybe Russian Railways and imposes his service?

Do you think the inconvenience end? Ha! They just begin. You will obliged to pick up your suitcases From the trunk of the machine and stump with them in the coupe. You obliged not to lock your car And do not include the signaling. In the car you can leave only what it is completed on the traffic rules: a first-aid kit, fire extinguisher, tools, spare parts, emergency stop sign, etc.

It would be possible to explain it by customs and border troubles, only here is the inspection of the car on the border, everything is precisely planned (and then you never know how you agreed with the conductor and it closed my eyes to your minivan, covered with all weapons and drugs). Apparently, although I can be mistaken, on the border you will be pulled out of a warm coupe on the frost on any of the warm coupe, we will behave in the sneakers and tripods on the outbreak platform to AvtoVagon and will inspect your car. Why not organize all these formalities at the station when loading a car, and in the end of it in the end, for such money?

In Finland, differently: I put the car into the car, things can be left inside, lock the car or not your business.

Suppose it was all the border bureaucracy and we met with it, as we mumble with still inevitable evil - receiving Schengen visas, the need to replace passports after the expiration of free pages or the term of its action, and airports to the airports and in frontier. Let's return to your beloved and native Russian Railways.

The supervisory price was only for the car! From above, you will need to still pay 107 euros for a room in a quadruple compartment, well, or those 23 with a fucking thing, if you don't want to shake in a train without a shower and toilet in 2 steps from bed.
If you failed to accumulate money on a separate coupe with a shower, Railways are pleased to offer you a shelf in a 6-seater placenta of the international train.

If we can not return back by car by our move, multiply this amount for two. Minimize the following: 107 * 2 = 214, 214 + 450 = 664.
And this is if you are traveling alone and with a car, excluding other shavers. If you are divided into two (although when traveling with cars in Helsinki from Moscow is not available), it will work out 332 euros, for this money you will be brought to one end, in one compartment with 3 unfamiliar people, with a car for a distance of 1108 kilometers. The coupe will not be sockets, sinks, and in the car there will be no common soul.
By the way, to book immediately and the car and the coupe "in one click", like Finns, it is impossible on the Railways website: do it all separately!

If the dear reader caught up to this place, he wonders, and why did I dismiss all these calculations and for which I so joyfully trol РЖД? So we got to the main thing, now I will understand everything.

Applause, a Finnish colleague and a partner of Russian Railways comes to the scene - VR, in a white freshly depressed suitsom to a green shirt.

So what does "VR" offer us? We traveled about 900 with a small kilometers from Rovaniemi to Turku, along with our car. Well, not 1108, of course, but what in the modern world some 100 kilometers? 7-10 liters of gasoline in ordinary passenger car? Hour path without traffic jams? Moscow from end to the end in its modern borders? Or Moscow is still more likely? In general, it is not important in this context. But we paid for all this pleasure 245 Euro! for two! With a car!

And without a car, one place in the double coupe will cost 106 euros.

And yes, I didn't just write the word "pleasure." Maybe this is all impressed me so much, because I first traveled on the European train? So what did we get for 245 euros?
Our "Placer" In the Finnish train. Yes, I did not get sealed, "Berth" In English means "reserved", or "sleeping place", it is under such a term that it is spelled out on the VR website and in the ticket.

Three sockets 220 volts in the coupe, and there are two separate alarm clocks for each passenger. Sink. If necessary, if you eat with children or company, two double coupe You can combine into one, the door is provided between them.

I also liked the branded bed linen. And there are normal duvets, and not stupidly sheets, in which you still need to manage to wrap the blanket! Nothing needs to receive or donate, even more so pay separately. It came in the coupe - everything is clean, ironed, already settled and ready for your parish, as in the hotel. A, Russian Railways Weak, yes?

I now want such a pillowcase, duvet covers and sheets! In full souls! Where to order them?

Shower, common truth, but tell me, in which wagons of Russian Railways have a common shower? Do you know that it is structurally provided in general, even in the very old "Amenderfov" cars? Or maybe I rarely go and somewhere they work?

Left to the right: a common shower in the car, a shared toilet, a separate shared toilet for children (all the necessary hygienic tools are of course present in such cases).

The second shared toilet in the car is intended for people with limited features and passengers with children. It is more spacious, it has handrails, a folding table for the sware of children, a pot, sink, necessary hygienic agents. The door to the toilet opens with a touch button, the crane with water (as well as in the usual toilet) opens, the liquid soap falls out. In all toilets, there are also mini souls next to the toilet, you understand for what purpose). This, by the way, is in general in all public toilets in Finland.

Pointers on "Amenities" are also available - finding everything you need is very easy.

The door of the coupe is locked up with a key, two keys for passengers and one key from a common soul. You can safely close the coupe and go to the car restaurant, that we actually have done. And for one investigated the Finnish train.

Second floor of the car. Here are a compartment with bathrooms ("Sleeping compartment"). Unfortunately, I forgot to take a picture of such a coupe. If you are too lazy to go to the site vr.fi, where there is virtual tour According to Finnish trains, it is certainly less pathetic than the one shown above the same coupe of the Railway train, something like that in which we rode, including in the area, but only there is still enough compact bathroom with a shower.

Do you know how much a ticket is a "major" coupe with a shower and toilet from "VR"? Pause. Here the Russian Railways end the cigarettes and break down a lighter, he spits on the floor and mumbling something obscene leaves the scene under whistle and hooking from the hall. So here. It costs 266.63 Euro, Also with the car and also for two. At least this is what the site is Vr.fi now.

Calculate there on the course 23 with a horseroming of rubles for a similar exclusive Russian Railways service. If you are traveling alone, pay 248 euros for such a coupe, and for the one in which we drove 179.96. When traveling without a car (autopacket), the fare in such a coupe will be 116 euros per person and 233 euros for two.
Something like I'm trying to translate at the rate, I can't have 23 with horseradish thousands of rubles. It would be possible to sin on an old Chinese calculator, but also on the computer such a figure does not work for some reason.

By the way, I do not think that here among the nights on the gearstroke to you in the coupe, a stranger will fit a suitcase in a compartment and starts savage to the chicken-covered chicken. In the "Lion Tolstom", with an almost empty car, it was in our coupe that for some reason new passengers simply satisfied. On weekends, however, all these prices are above the average euro for 30.

By the way, there is no conductor in the Finnish bedroom car, he's no need it: Lingerie is set, wake you will scream through a speakerphone, or you can put a built-in alarm clock. And tea? Tea in the restaurant car. Well, or you can brew if the electric kettle or boiler took with you - there are sockets.

When moving from one car to another, you see a display with its number. Do not get lost. No, it is not a train of 70 cars, it's just his "systemic" number.

Tambour. Doors are all automatic. On the right toilet for disabled people and passengers with children, which I showed above.

Finally reached the restaurant's car, where the beer drank and snacks.

Quite comfortably and silently.

There is a train and a sedentary car.

A third of the sedentary wagon occupies a luggage compartment.

In Turku, maneuver locomotives are more traditional.

The same station in Turku is quite clean and cozy.

The train went on to Helsinki, and cars with cars those who arrived in the Turku chuckled and drove to the ramp for unloading.

Dangerous work.

Our car is discharged - on he goes its own way.

****
Finally thought. It seems like the WTO in the yard, in theory, the doors are open to all kinds of international competition. Is it time to shake the monopolistic rest of the very beginning of the thickness of Russian Railways? If with all sorts of temperate there, it is complicated, the rut is different, and then they are from us, then would you start to launch to us at least Finnish "VR"? With our realities, of course, you can only dream about it, but suddenly if not the prices would decrease, then at least comfort rose? And in the end, RAZ rail trains go to Finland, and in other European countries, why do not go to us to European trains? Like airlines. Here you have a healthy competition.

In the meantime, it turns out, it is unprofitable to travel with a car from Russia to Finland, for the money and with the hemorrhoids that Russian Railways offer us, you can at least two weeks, if not more, ride in Finland on a rented car. And in 23, with a horseradish, the ticket at all can be flown over an hour and back, instead of shaking in their major coupe with a toilet bowl. The fact that in Europe is a common phenomenon, an elementary comfortable compartment for two places or even a compartment with a bathroom - Russian Railways still refers to exclusive services "for the rich".
