How many legends have we heard, how many mountains we saw, breathed in the mountain air, drank useful spring water from almost all sources, saw enough of the stars and winter forest, shiny fir and mighty cedars. Here I understood the difference between fir and spruce, the first has soft needles, and the second has sharp ones (if you draw in the opposite direction from the needles). Perhaps civilization is killing knowledge in us.

We tried the Chok-Chok dessert - these are healthy sweets, which do not contain sugar at all. Mix talkan (roasted barley coarse flour) with honey, sour cream and pine nuts.

We learned that on the growing moon ("Ai" in Altai) the shaman asked for Dai (good), and for the waning moon - Take (bad). Here the girl Regina performed a game on the ocarina (whistle).

Acquaintance with Gorny Altai began in the evening with a stele, the inscription on which read "Altai", or rather from the legend about the daughter of the rich Altai Khan Katun and about the young shepherd Biya. Numerous fans sought the hand of the beauty, but were rejected. No one knew that she secretly loved Biya. And the angry father said: "I will marry you for whom I wish." She ran away from her father. The fugitive warriors did not catch up. She met with her chosen one, threw herself into his arms, and so, embracing, flowed together forever, forming the mighty Siberian river Ob.

Further, we kept our way to Lake Teletskoye, which is called the pearl of Altai, we could only see its size, wherever the eye sees. On one side of the bridge there is a lake, on the other side of the lake flows the Biya River. And again, legends-fairy tales from childhood come to mind, for some reason, about how the insidious enemy Bogdo defeated Khan Tele, when the soldiers of the latter attacked the guest, a golden sword fell in his house - the invincible weapon of Khan Tele, and in that place a huge abyss formed, which filled with the tears of his wife. Our guide Vitaly will tell us a lot more interesting things on the way about flora and fauna, about customs and traditions, about people, legends and historical facts.

The next frosty morning an excursion on snowmobiles to the hunting lodge of Koono awaited us, we drove 20 km, about an hour's journey; in the house, we were treated to tea and tincture of the golden root, we visited the local ethnographic museum. Sergey is the owner, a very good-natured and smiling person.

Altai is a place of extraordinary power, where all desires are fulfilled and the most daring deeds are feasible. Look at the signs! The guy with us was in the group, he had a bag with the word HILO (SIGN: 1. linen fabric, linen 2. thin stream (water, etc.) 3. go on about), in Russian Hilo, and I thought , but you don't want to swim in Katun, which I asked him about, but first of all yourself.

We swam in Katun! Believe me, the devil is not so terrible as he is painted. It turns out that only 5% dare to do it. How proud we girls were of ourselves! Little green men - Robin Hoods - stoked the bathhouse in Aiyl on the shore and treated them to hot herbal tea.

Aiyl - yurt, usually an Altai family settles in a hut, built according to the Russian model, and the traditional ayil (hexagonal yurt) was installed nearby as a temporary summer dwelling.

We placated the spirits with a honey drink and were lucky with the weather, except for the first day, as we drove with a delay and missed Manzherok, but isn't that good? It was frosty and windy that day. Later, on the way back, we visited it and it was only minus three! And there I met an Altaian with an Altai name - Madiy. He was a master of sports of the USSR in Greco-Roman wrestling, he founded a school for national wrestling, and an honorary citizen of the Altai Republic. By the way, Altai has been together with Russia for 200 years, about which we read the inscription on the Seminsky Pass. It is located on the 583rd kilometer of the P-256 Chuisky tract highway. The height of the pass is 1717 m, the ascent from the north side is 9 km, the descent to the south side is 11 km. There is an Olympic reserve ski base and the Russian national biathlon team traditionally trains. Various souvenirs are sold nearby.

In Altai, you can even find the Berendey kingdom! The village "Berendeyevka" is located in one of the most picturesque areas of the Altai Mountains on the coast of the Sema River behind the village of Kamlak.

In the last century, based on the tale of Alexander Nikolaevich Ostrovsky, Rimsky-Korsakov wrote the opera The Snow Maiden, the action of which took place in a wonderful kind kingdom, where the just and kind king Berendey ruled, where Love and Good reigned. Hence the expression "Berendey's kingdom" - the kingdom of love, goodness and justice! And the Berendei are ancient nomadic tribes. Most historians consider them to be "relatives" of the Pechenegs of Turkic origin. Who knows, maybe they were from there ..

In Gorno-Altaysk we visited National Museum them. A.V. Anokhin, where they learned about the Pazyryk culture of the Iron Age (VI-III centuries BC), how wooden products were wrapped with gold foil, that men and women wore felt stockings that were comfortable for riding, and saddles were decorated with products made of felt, pendants to the saddle have been preserved from the 4th century BC.

They say that some of the Scythians interfered with the Asians for centuries, they are close to the modern inhabitants of Altai. Horse equipment, weapons and items made in the animal style. The mummy of the "Altai princess", from the clan of priestesses, was closed for viewing on the day of the visit. Burials were found on the Ukok plateau. We learned that two log cabins were made at the burial, for a man and his horse. How many more secrets are kept in the Altai glaciers? A great padishah lived on the Altai mountains ... that's what a child's counting is about ... the Scythians are an ancient Iranian-speaking people, they had padishahs ....
The most breathtaking excursion was a tour of the Chemal hydroelectric power station, built in 1935.

We really walked along the "goat path" along the Katun, and the roots of huge pines spread along the path, not allowing the traveler to pass. Another fairy tale is recalled on the Chemal River, into which two springs of Living and Dead water flow, “sister Alyonushka and brother Ivanushka”. It is not in vain that all fairy tales end, the fairy tale is true, but there is a hint in it, a lesson for good fellows. But according to legends, Dead Water is not bad at all, just the Dark Shaman bestowed Health with this water, and those who were looking for Love went to the White Shaman for Living Water.

There are so few people living in the Altai mountains that there seems to be no one in the villages. Once we had to reschedule lunch, as the only cafe of the national Altai cuisine was closed.

On the way, we stopped at an interesting place, in the Kalbak-Tash tract, where bizarre ancient petroglyphs were depicted on low rocks. I imagined shepherds hollowing out drawings with metal tools on a sultry day many thousands of years ago. On the way to lunch, we saw burial mounds - ancient burials of the Turks and the "stone women" guarding their peace. At the gas station, instead of gasoline, wooden chocks. Obviously, the gas station was no longer working.

So I wanted to drive along the branch of the Silk Road - the Chuisky tract. Formerly called the Mungalsky tract, it was mentioned in the Chinese chronicles of a thousand years ago. On the Chike-Taman pass, this path is still visible from the observation deck of the modern road. Near the monument to the song to Kolka Snegirev you can see a piece of the Chuisky tract, lined with identical stones ..

On the 6th day in the morning we set off along the Chuysky tract towards the Mongolian border. From the huge intermountain basin of the Kuraiskaya steppe, we looked at the peaks of the North Chuisky ridge with the peaks Aktru-Bash (4075 m) and Karatash (3534 m). From lunch we passed the natural monument - "Red Gate" on the river. Chibitka, where the road passes in a narrowing between two rocks of a reddish hue because of the stone, is called cinnabar. All inscriptions are prohibited on the rocks, but one from the time of the return of the warrior from the Second World War has survived.

On the way, we stopped at the cheerful warrant officer Valentin Mikhailovich among the people “Mikhalych”, who owns his own lake and builds just wooden log cabins, ayils for tourists, and even laid pipes for heating. He has goats, which he gives funny political names, pigs, 2 horses, dogs ... every morning he raises the flag over his valley and plays the button accordion. The simple life of a common man.
Finally, we reached the Ulagan Pass (2080 m), such a gentle pink sunset was waiting for us. it extreme point our journey. It's a little sad to part.

Where to have a rest in Altai in winter? - I get asked this question more and more often. I'm glad about that! Finally, bright thoughts appear in people's heads. You can have a rest in Altai not only in summer, but also in winter. Is it interesting? My affirmative answer is yes!

Of course, you can't find big mountain hikes, bright horse trails and dizzying rafting in winter, but winter Altai is a special world filled with tranquility and beauty. You need to have a rest in winter for the benefit of the soul, best of all with a family or in the company of true friends.

Now my opinion will sound, based on personal experience... If you live far from Altai, have not been here nirazu and you have only two weeks of vacation, then come! I am sure that to start acquaintance with this mountainous country you need it when it's warm. If you are a resident of neighboring regions or have been here in the summer, then you just need to come to Altai in winter!

Where we go? What are we watching? How much do we pay?

In winter, there are only a few travel destinations in Altai. They are all tied to a warm place in one way or another. ... To be more objective and not to shock you with prices, I am considering a period not associated with New Years holidays... Even for me, pricing remains wild and the "tourist businessmen" New Year and the next week.

1. Teletskoye lake.

The village of Artybash is a tourist cauldron, where everything is mixed and the beauty of Lake Teletskoye, and real suverins, and delicious food, and of course active rest. - ski! There is a lot of talk about this, the ski slope is open, it works. Not everything is very good there, but as entertainment for one day - it will do. There are skis, boards and snowtube rentals.

Siberian bath with an ice-hole. If you have never dived into ice water, then you can start this business here.
- winter fishing on the lake. Not a fisherman, so I can't tell you in detail.
- photographing. The vicinity of the village is a paradise for lovers of winter nature. You will have to walk up to your waist in the snow, but it's worth it.

2. Seminsky pass

Automobile pass at an altitude of 1800 meters. An iconic place for the local population and a good place for a relaxing holiday. There is not a large number of bases here, or rather, there are only a couple of them here. There are very few people.

Cross-hike to the Sarlyk peak. In winter, a dubious pleasure, but especially desperate people go snowshoeing or skiing. You can also throw yourself on a snowmobile.
- alpine skiing. To all famous place for skiing or snowboarding. The tracks are of medium length, suitable for beginners and "cautious" riders. In general, for those who are used to skating without fuss and fear of being knocked down.
- photographing. Probably I'll stop writing this point, for me this is the first lesson ...

3. Chemal region, with. Chemal

A popular summer anthill. Which turns into an almost peaceful place in winter. There is a reason for this. There is nothing to do here. It is worth going here only if you are in a private car. It is necessary to drive another 20 - 60 km to the sights.

Auto excursion by private transport to the Tykdelpensky bridge. It is difficult to pronounce the name, but in fact the place is beautiful. The narrow canyon of the Katun River, huge ice torossies, steep. Along the way, you can make stops at a couple of attractive places and be sure to go to observation deck near the Chechkysh valley.

Hiking in the surroundings. Well, what else is there to do? You can go to the former hydroelectric power station on the Chemal River, to the island of Patmos, climb one of the surrounding peaks and look at the world from a high point.
- walking tour to the Karakol lakes. This is from the category of exclusive. Not for all. And almost no one officially distributes such a proposal in winter.

4. Belokurikha

- alpine skiing. Perhaps one of the very first alpine skiers in Altai is located in Belokurikha. The tracks are not big, but their quality is at a good level.

Walks in the surroundings. There is plenty to walk here, including along specially equipped routes. You can keep yourself busy for a couple of days.
- excursion to the "Swan Reserve". A full day trip to the Swan Lake, in the neighboring district of Belokurikha - Sovetsky. An amazing place where wild swans have been flying for wintering for more than 30 years. The number of birds is amazing, and their cries are heard even a couple of kilometers from the lake.

- excursion to the "Siberian compound". A huge platform on which there is a hippodrome, an equestrian, poultry yards, a museum with old agricultural utensils, etc. But it's not interesting to come here separately, it's better to wait for some, which, by the way, take place here almost every weekend.

Aquapark. There is also such a miracle in a distant Siberian city. Fun for one day.
