HOLIDAYS IN GREECE IN SUMMER

The climate of Greece can be divided into three types: Mediterranean, Alpine and temperate.

The Mediterranean is characterized by mild, wet winters and hot, dry summers. Summer here is dry and hot, the temperature in July-August fluctuates around +25-28°C, but often rises to +40-45°C. Strong northerly winds "meltemya" ("meltemi") somewhat reduce the temperature, but cannot bring precipitation, so there are often years when not a drop of rain falls for the whole summer. Winter is mild (January - +4-12°C) and wet. The Cyclades, Dodecanese, Crete, the eastern part of the Peloponnese and part of Central Greece are located in this type of climate. Temperatures here don't often hit record highs, and in winter, even in the Cyclades and Dodecanese, snow can occasionally fall during the winter months.

Alpine type is more typical for mountainous areas. Summers are hot and dry here (average July temperature is +28°C), while winters are cold (in January the air often drops to -8°C) and humid.

Eastern Macedonia and Thrace can be classified as regions with a temperate climate type, with relatively cold and wet winters and hot, dry summers.

HOLIDAYS IN GREECE SUMMER 2012

The traditional cuisine of Greece is typically Mediterranean and has much in common with the cuisine of the south of France, Italy, the Balkans, Anatolia and the Middle East.

Greek cuisine is simple, wholesome, unpretentious and uses the very best ingredients: tempting olives, fruits and vegetables, freshly caught fish cooked in the finest local olive oil. The meat - usually lamb or pork - is stewed, baked or barbecued. Cheeses are very important: salty feta is used in salads, halloumi is often grilled, and amari, a mild, mild cheese like ricotta, is used in sweet and spicy dishes.

Greek cuisine uses herbs and spices much more than other Mediterranean cuisines, and its unusual flavors are defined by the use of rosemary, basil, parsley, coriander, oregano and mint.

The fresh vegetables and fruits of this fertile land are widely used: sweet tomatoes, plump olives, sour lemons, chillies, wild greens, shiny zucchini, long green peppers, majestic eggplants, juicy melons and figs.

Thanks to the sea (which, by the way, is visible from almost every corner of any island), Greek cuisine is replete with fish and a variety of seafood: red mullet, eel, swordfish, octopus, squid, shrimp, mussels, cuttlefish, lobsters and many other seafood. You can always try fish dishes in fish taverns (psarotavena), which are usually located on the shore.

Modern Greek food is simple, colorful and flavorful. A popular Greek fast food is gyros, which is based on unleavened pita bread. It is lightly fried on both sides, then cut so that a “pocket” is obtained, which is tightly stuffed with finely chopped vegetables, fried pieces of pork or chicken, seasoned with yogurt sauce.

You can write a multi-volume treatise about Greek cuisine and its traditions, but it is best to get to know it personally.

OLIVES AND OLIVE OIL

According to legend, the goddess Athena won the dispute over Attica, presenting people with the most valuable gift - the olive tree. Next to the first olive tree, the Parthenon was erected - a symbol of Greek culture, freedom and peace. Since then, people have been eating the fruits of this tree and making oil from them, which is eaten, used as a medicinal and cosmetic product. The olive branch is the symbol and pride of the country.

The felling of olive trees in Greece is prohibited by law. If you have purchased land plot, on which an olive tree grows, and for some reason it interferes with you, you must obtain a special permit that allows you to dig it up and move it. The olive tree grows and bears fruit for 500 years or more.

Olives and black olives are fruits of the same tree. The difference between these fruits is in the degree of maturity and oil content. There are varieties of oil and pickling. In oil varieties, the oil content reaches 80%.

Olives are an important part of Greek cuisine. They are used both to decorate dishes and as their full-fledged component. Small olives are added to cold appetizers and salads; medium - in pizzas and pastas; large ones are mostly stuffed. Black olives are usually served with meat dishes, green olives with fish. Both of them can be eaten as independent snacks.

There is an opinion that a dozen olives eaten before meals is the best prevention of stomach ulcers.

No meal in Greece is complete without olive oil. This vitamin-rich oil is easy to digest. It consists of polyunsaturated acids, proteins, vitamins and fiber necessary for the body. It is known that daily consumption of olives reduces the risk of diseases of the cardiovascular system, reduces the likelihood of a heart attack, and prevents the development of cancer. The Greeks hold this "liquid gold" in high regard and season almost everything with it.

MONEY

The monetary unit of Greece is the euro.

Euro is equal to 100 cents. There are banknotes in denominations of 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 and 500 euros, as well as coins in denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50 cents.

Cash currency can only be exchanged in banks or exchange offices (a tax of 1-2% of the amount exchanged is charged), as well as in special sections of post offices. The number of ATMs is quite large. Hotels, large tourist centers and supermarkets accept credit cards of major international payment systems, often with a commission of 3-5% for a banking transaction (cash is easiest to get with a VISA, MASTERCARD card). Traveler's checks are exchanged at banks and representative offices of the respective companies, but the commission for their exchange is quite high. It is better to pay current expenses in euros.
